How to feast like a true Swede

We Swedes love to entertain, especially during the holiday season. This year we’re stepping up our game with fresh takes on our traditional favourites. So unleash your inner Nordic chef and create your own smörgåsbord. You can find lots of these ingredients at your own IKEA store, and all of our recipes right here.

Start your meal without a drink? Never. For a simple yet impressive pre-dinner refresher try our pear ginger spritz. Fill your glass with ice and about a tablespoon of pomegranate seeds. Top the glass off with equal parts of sparkling pear drink, cranberry juice and ginger ale. Add a pomegranate wedge and a vanilla bean as garnish and sip up.
Herring is one of those true Scandinavian classics that we can’t get enough of. That’s while you’ll find it at the table all year long. Try dressing it up with crunchy carrots, fennel, onion and dill, and serve it on top of a slice of dark rye bread. Your time-saving secret? You can make the bread from our speedy mix (but don’t worry, your guests will never be able to tell).

Christmas feasts are notoriously heavy, so give your buffet table a lighter touch with a boost of super foods. Start with a base of kale and top it off with Brussels sprouts, orange segments, rye bread crumbs, blue cheese and dried pears. It’s fresh, healthy and most importantly, tasty enough to earn its spot in the holiday lineup. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of other hearty goodness to be had. Like meatballs with salt roasted beetroot, caramelised onions and crème fraîche, Christmas ham and celeriac remoulade, or chicken meatballs with endives and orange.
Few things are more Swedish than glögg, our version of mulled wine. We love to sip on it, but it also plays a pivotal role in our best new dessert. Use it to poach pears, and top them with saffron whipped cream and some gingerbread cookie crumbs. Your guests can each assemple their own dish for a super easy way to to wrap up the meal.
