Better World Starts at Home

At IKEA we want to have a positive impact on the world. That’s why our ambition is to make it easier for people to live a more sustainable life at home. Our goal is that by 2030, 100% of the IKEA products will be made from recycled or renewable materials. We are well on the way, but in some areas, the journey is longer than in others.

By choosing a more sustainable product, you are helping to create positive change for People + Planet together with us.

    Thank you!

    Our top picks

Close up of flowing water meeting a surface.

    Every drop counts

Did you know that less than 3% of the water on our planet is fresh? That’s why all our kitchen and bathroom taps are equipped with aerators that reduce water use by up to 40% - so you can use less, without losing out on pressure.

    Our top picks

IKEA SORTERA Waste sorting bin with lid.

    Let’s sort it out together

Store your food in a way that helps you use what you have. Bring leftovers for lunch. Create a small (or big!) waste sorting station in your home. All great things to minimize waste – and make your home a little more organised.

    Our top picks

A forest is reflected in a mountain lake.

    Using wood responsibly

We love wood because it’s durable, renewable, recyclable and beautiful. But we must use it responsibly. This is why our goal is that all wood will come from more sustainable sources by 2020.

    Our top picks

Women carrying recently picked, responsibly grown cotton in textile bags on their heads.

    Cotton grown with care

Since 2015, all the cotton we use for IKEA products comes from more sustainable sources. This means it is grown with less water and chemicals, which can lead to increased benefits for the cotton farmers and their families.

    Our top picks

A woman is gathering flowers in a sunny field.

Great taste – and good for the planet

Making conscious choices when it comes to food can have an impact on the planet. Sustainably sourced fish and seafood, organic or plant based food – the options are many. But they’re all delicious!

    Our top picks

Mother and son are filling a ISTAD plastic bags with ice cubes.

On the way towards better plastics

Plastic is everywhere for many reasons. It’s strong, durable, lightweight, and versatile. But we need to dispose of it in a good way – and find better ways of producing it. Our ambition is that by 2030, all plastic used in our products will be based on renewable or recycled material.

    Our top picks

Close-up of a woman weaving a rug with a loom.

Products that can make a difference

Can how a rug or a pillow cover is produced make a difference? Well, all handmade rugs at IKEA are produced in a good way, with decent working conditions (and steady income) for the weavers and workers. And through collaborations with social entrepreneurs we can give people easier access to the labour market. To us the answer is a definite yes.

    Our top picks

Close-up of a hand with a paintbrush painting a stool.

A longer life with a little more care

If you’d like your furniture to keep looking good and last longer, just give it a little bit of extra care. From beeswax and treatment oils to stick-on protectors, we have products that help maintain the things at home you care about and make them more resistant to all the dings and scratches of daily life.

    Our top picks

Plastic PET bottles – waste – waiting to be recycled and used as material for IKEA products.

    Re-use and reduce

By working with recycled materials we can both use less new raw materials and at the same time lower our environmental footprint. This is why we use recycled materials whenever possible, leading up to our goal for 2030 to only use renewable and recycled materials in our products. Wood, plastic, paper, and metal are just a few that we love to work with.
