IKEA Japan joins Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership
The total IKEA climate footprint is an estimated 0.1% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Our footprint covers the entire lifecycle of our products – from the extraction and processing of raw materials, the stores and touchpoints where we meet our customers to the use and end-of-life of our products. We have a big responsibility – and many opportunities – to make a positive difference on climate change.
The challenges we face are huge. We will only achieve our aim by engaging with others and taking action together – leading by example, collaborating to develop solutions, advocating for policy changes and inspiring further action.
This is why we have decided to join Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), a business coalition that aims to create a decarbonized society, seizing on the idea that sustainable decarbonization development is a prerequisite for economic activity. It was set up to urge the business sector to develop a sound sense of urgency on the issue of climate change and to initiate more proactive actions. The member companies share a common goal and communicate proactively with policy makers, businesses and other stakeholders. For example, JCLP has been voicing the need for 2050 net zero goal in Japan and globally before Prime Minister Suga’s announcement in Oct 2020. In addition, they have released proposals on Japan’s Energy Mix calling for a renewable electricity target of 50% by 2030. By joining forces, we know that we will be able to achieve a lot, and we look forward to a fantastic cooperation.
From our history, we know that challenges can become opportunities and the source of great innovations. That’s why we remain optimistic.
