Home visit: make a puppet theatre from an old box

When you’ve unboxed your new buy, don’t bin the cardboard! With a little imagination, paint and fabric, you can turn it into a showstopping puppet theatre. Watch the video to see how easy it is!

DIY puppet theatre

It’s a quick job! Get a cardboard box, scissors, brushes, paint (we used MÅLA fluorescent paints in happy brights), fabric, string and a marker. Cut off the back of the box but keep the sides so it stands up. On the front, draw your stage’s shape then cut it out. Decorate. Make your curtains (stitch or tape a seam to thread the string through). Hang curtains and ta-da, the stage is set.

Use your imagination

What can you do with a cardboard box? A question that inspired our puppet theatre. We were visiting Hannah, Per and their kids Jack, Lo and Juno. Dad Per was up for the challenge and did the ‘sharp tool’ work while Lo painted (Juno did a stripe too!) and Jack was the puppeteer who entertained us all with tales of the adventurous owl.
