Are you the type that sees a sofa bed as more than simply a place to sit or sleep? Perhaps as an ever-changing place with space for your life. A place where you can work, enjoy a coffee or watch a movie. So that everyone in the home has space for their needs and interests. Then, you’re the IKEA type. When creating FLOTTEBO sofa bed, we found ideas and inspiration in all kinds of places. To solve a back cushion challenge, we even turned to motorcycle gloves.
The activities happening in the living room are changing. Today, the room is of a more fluid nature where someone might be watching a movie while another works on their laptop or does homework.
"That's why we needed a sofa bed that is more like a platform for all these activities and which works in many different homes", Christina Halskov, who helped design FLOTTEBO sofa bed, summarizes.
Christina and her co-designers started to sketch.
"Traditional sofa beds look a certain way during the day and in a different way in the evening when they're transformed for sleeping, but we wanted FLOTTEBO to have the same appearance and be comfortable enough to both sit on and sleep in", says Christina.
At the beds department, the team found inspiration for creating storage space under the frame.
"Many people have limited space and a great need for storage. Here was a hidden space which we were able to take advantage of,” explains Christina.
As for back cushions, the final choice fell on flexible, loose cushions.
"But it was important that the cushions didn't slide away when leaning your weight against them,” explains Christina.
To solve this challenge, the team’s engineer examined things like bath mats and motorcycle gloves, or more specifically, the surface underneath which provides a good grip.
"I hope FLOTTEBO is embraced into many different homes and fulfils different dreams, wherever you're living in the world," Christina sums up.
