What is banana fibre?
A banana plant can be up to nine metres tall, and the plant dies once it produces fruit. The trunk is chopped down and the outer parts are cut into smaller pieces, which are dried in the sun. The dry pieces are then made into narrow strips that are braided or woven into furniture. There are many different types of banana plant, which is why the fibres can shift in colour. We like to blend them - it gives our products more life.
“My idea was to create baskets with banana fibre that resemble traditional Scandinavian birch-bark baskets with square bottoms and round openings. The materials look the same, but banana fibre is softer, stronger and has a natural outer wax layer. The small basket is good for little things, the big one is good for quilts by the sofa and the box with lid can be used as a gift box. All are good examples of how waste materials can be used and transformed into something new.”
