The Smart Lighting range is part of IKEA’s long-term commitment to their home tech innovation initiative, ‘Home Smart’. It has been developed after research showed that small changes in lighting can have a great impact on people’s well-being and intellectual abilities, with cold lighting suited for learning and warm for relaxing.
The Smart Lighting collection being introduced in stores and online in April 2017 includes LED bulbs, lighting panels and doors which are all controlled through a remote control by the homeowner. The range is a plug and play solution, meaning that there is no need for hardwiring as customers can simply switch their traditional lightbulbs with a TRÅDFRI LED bulb to enable them to adjust their lighting. Since the technology developed for switching between light tones and dimming is found inside the bulb itself, TRÅDFRI can be used in any lamp with the standard socket sizes.
Although technology for smart lighting has been around for some years, it has not been adopted by many people it as it has been unaffordable and inaccessible until now.
Björn Block, Business Leader for IKEA Home Smart said:
“Through home visits and research we identified that existing technology is perceived as being too expensive and difficult to understand. With this in mind, we set out to make the TRÅDFRI dimming kit easy to use and affordable.”
The launch is IKEA’s first step in smart lighting and second step in IKEA ‘Home Smart’, which began with the launch of wireless charging products for mobile phones last year. The Home Smart initiative was created by IKEA to make smart home technology more accessible to people and will continue to develop ranges in the years to come.
The new IKEA collection will initially be launched in four pilot markets: Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy and Belgium. All other countries in Europe and North America will launch Smart Lighting products in April 2017.
