Trend alert: Bold sustainability

12 July 2018

Want to create a home that’s stylish as well as sustainable? Then it’s time to welcome the new trend that matches environmentally-friendly ideas with striking design.

“At its heart, Bold Sustainability is about the materials but it’s also about having fun.”

Clotilde Passalacqua, Interior Design Leader at IKEA UK & Ireland

For years, creating a stylish home that had environmental credentials at its heart meant decorating with a base of neutral tones and plain furniture. But developments in design mean things have moved on – a sustainable, home can now be fun and striking too. Bold Sustainability is all about celebrating striking environmentally-friendly interiors that feature standout designs using recycled or reclaimed materials. The good news is that sustainable living can at last allow for personal expression.

3 ways to try the trend

The YPPERLIG table not only makes a strong statement in any room but it’s crafted from sustainable wood. The natural pale grain, unique to each table, contrasts beautifully with the black details. Just add on-trend green plants.

The recycled sideboard is for those looking to make a bigger splash. The bold black KUNGSBACKA range is the perfect focal-point and is made from recycled wood and covered with a plastic foil made using recycled PET bottles, reducing waste and giving plastic a new use in the home.

Introduce the NODEBO rug into your living room or bedroom. This striking artisan rug, in tonal greens and blues, is handwoven and made in good working conditions by craftspeople paid fair wages.

Clotilde Passalacqua, Interior Design Leader at IKEA UK & Ireland, says she’s delighted the public’s increased focus on sustainability gives IKEA the opportunity to have more fun with green designs: “Our ambition at IKEA is to constantly increase the share of recycled materials in our designs, without compromising on quality, design or price. At its heart, Bold Sustainability is about the materials but it’s also about having fun,” says Clotilde.
