Home visit: a kid’s room packed with personality

No matter the size of the space, a kid’s bedroom can express his or her growing personality in many ways. Take a look at the ideas Olivia (9) and her parents used to create her unique space…

Transform something plain into something personal. Craft projects are something you can do together – Olivia’s mum, Pati, loves to use affordable craft supplies to personalise things. Olivia’s headboard is handmade using wadding and IKEA fabric. Smaller updates include decorating the pots for Olivia’s plants with gold tape.

Make creative use of space, especially in a compact bedroom. Olivia recently got a small double bed so that she doesn’t grow out of it too quickly, but it takes up quite a bit of floorspace. Fitting a corner wardrobe has given her lots of storage and means that the awkward space behind the door hasn’t gone to waste.

Now that Olivia has homework to do, a desk with an upright chair, task lamp and stationery organisers help her to focus. Let kids have fun with putting their favourite things on show. Olivia has started filling an empty box frame with figurines and keepsakes that she’s collected.

Let kids take ownership of their colour scheme. Even if you don’t paint the walls, colourful and patterned textiles are an easy way of bringing in their choice of colour. “I loved picking the paints for my bedroom – dark blue is my favourite, but neon colours are cool too,” says Olivia. “The best part of my room is my bed!”

We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
