IKEA uk and ireland wins company of the year at businessgreen leaders awards

IKEA UK and Ireland was named as Company of the Year at the 2014 BusinessGreen Leaders Awards held on Wednesday 2 June. Amid intense competition, IKEA was selected for its company-wide commitment to sustainability, described by judges as “one of the most ambitious green business strategies ever enacted by a major corporation”.

Speaking after the awards, Joanna Yarrow, Sustainability Manager, IKEA UK and Ireland, said: “I am extremely delighted and honoured that IKEA has been recognised as the winner of this award. It is very humbling that our commitment to sustainability has been recognised. From designing products that help our customers and co-workers live a more sustainable life at home and the way we manufacture and transport goods, through to our commitment to become resource and energy independent and our focus on helping to create a better life for children in many parts of the world with our IKEA Foundation-funded programmes, we are working hard to be a more sustainable business.

“At the same time, we know that we still have a lot of work to do to reach our goals set out in our People, Planet Positive strategy and our co-workers play an important role in this. With their commitment and enthusiasm, we can show customers how our products can save them money as well as help them live more sustainably.”

Commenting on why IKEA was chosen for the awards, the judges said: “This year’s winner has developed one of the world’s most comprehensive green procurement programmes, placed energy and resource efficiency at the heart of its business, normalised the sale of energy efficient lighting, pledged to invest €1.5bn in developing its own renewables capacity, and famously started selling solar panels to retail consumers. But more importantly, this company has demonstrated that a multinational giant can embrace the kind of drastic change that is necessary to lead the green economy into its next stage of development, just as it has also demonstrated that greener products do not require compromise, they can be desirable and attainable, as well as sustainable.”

Now in their fourth year, the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards are considered the biggest green/sustainability awards in Europe. They celebrate businesses, executives, entrepreneurs, investors and campaigners from across the green economy, highlighting how these pioneers are driving the emergence of innovative and sustainable new business models and technologies.
