IKEA is launching a new ‘Foot of Forest in your local community’ campaign, whereby IKEA FAMILY members will activate a contribution towards a total donation of £500,000 from IKEA with every swipe of their membership card. IKEA also aim to raise an additional £500,000 through customer contributions at the checkouts of all IKEA stores, whereby customers will be invited to donate the value of a tree (£1). Money raised from both schemes will go towards the Woodland Trust’s ‘Trees for the Community’ scheme which aims to plant 1 million trees by the end of 2013.Since 2008, IKEA has donated £1.3 million pounds to the Woodland Trust through the previous ‘Foot of Forest’ campaign, helping to plant 309 acres of woodland in the UK, the same size as the Olympic Village. As the UK currently is one of the least wooded counties with only 13% woodland, compared to an average of 44% in the rest of Europe, this campaign aims to make a real difference to local communities across the UK.
In addition to raising funds for the planting of trees, IKEA aims to involve customers and families with fun activities to get them out into the great outdoors. Research carried out by IKEA revealed that 50% of parents feel it is very important for children to spend time playing outdoors, which is why IKEA aims to encourage communities to go out and enjoy their local green spaces - by hosting in store children’s picnic corners, tree climbing guides and offering free tree packs containing woodland related games, ideas and picnic product ideas to inspire families to get out in to their local woodland and help support the campaign in their area. Come along to your local IKEA store to find our more information on what’s happening in your local area.Charlie Brown Sustainable Development Manager at IKEA says
‘We’re really pleased to announce our continued support of the Woodland Trust through the ‘Foot of Forest’ campaign. We all have a responsibility to look after our precious woodland and green spaces. By partnering with the Woodlands Trust, we can get local communities involved to make a difference to their area and the same time get our children engaged with nature and the environment. With our valued customer support, our ambition is to plant over 1 million trees in the UK by 2013.”
IKEA will be encouraging customers to consider taking part in the Woodland Trust’s ‘Trees for Communities’ scheme by applying for a free tree pack for their own local community groups at: http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/treesforcommunitiesFor more information on the IKEA FAMILY Foot of Forest Campaign visithttp://ikea.co.uk
