Expansion in the UK

Expansion in the UK

At IKEA we want to help create a better everyday life for the many people. Knowing that we have helped to improve life at home by providing inspiration or solutions means we have done our job - and that makes us very happy.

Everyone deserves to live ‘the wonderful everyday’  - we want to be able to bring this experience to more people in the UK which is why we have an expansion programme and plans to build more stores.

Well, how are we getting on with our plans to improve life at home for the many people?

Locations under development

IKEA Greenwich will be our first full-sized London store built in 13 years and it is set to be a destination for healthy and sustainable living.

The new 32,000 sqm Greenwich store will be located on the Millennium Way Retail Park in Greenwich and the construction of the store has been ongoing since the groundbreaking ceremony took place in late November 2017.
IKEA Greenwich will be the most sustainable store in the UK to date and the store will be highly accessible by public transport serviced by 6 bus routes and up to 42 buses every hour, stopping just outside the store.

There will also be a 1,200 sqm roof terrace which will be open to the public with capacity for 500, as well as a 240 sqm roof pavilion and biodiversity garden. IKEA Greenwich is expected to open early 2019.

Improvements will include:

• A larger showroom displaying inspirational roomsets.
• A new and more accessible markethall.
• A refurbished Smaland.
• Greater seating capacity in a newly refurbished restaurant.

• Wider aisles in the self - serve area to give more space both to customers and for goods handling.

A new extended co-worker area, co-worker restaurant, goods receiving area and re-cycling area is also planned as part of the refurbishment. There are also changes to make the store more sustainable and energy efficient.
