Beautiful and solid Anonymous reviewerTimeless bright wood, thoughtful design (no sharp edges or corners)- 6spacious seats but also easy and comfortable for 8 people. Big and heavy- looks light and subtle. More than happy with this ❤️5
Gorgeous tableAnonymous reviewerReally love this table. Nice light colour, made from sustainable bamboo. Nice design and really good quality. Heavy and thick, will last a long time. Easy to put together. Good size for 4-6 people. Looks great for such a good price!5
Not as advertisedAnonymous reviewerI liked the table on the picture. I went to IKEA to see it up close but wasn't available. I purchased it online. The table I received had a completely different finish. It had so many spots that it looked like a leopard. I returned it and received an another one. The new one was about 15% better but still has too many spots, not as many or as dark as the first one but still not plain and minimal like the one in the picture. Didn't bother to send it back again. I needed a table.2
Good table and chairs, pleasedAnonymous reviewerGood table and chairs, pleased with our purchase.5
Split wood along full length of table topAnonymous reviewerI live on my own and this table was hardly used . The table top was pristine. However a crack/ split developed along the grain of the wood for the full length of the table. As the table was a little over a year old Ikea didn’t want to know. All they could offer was to donate the table to their charity which I did. A one year guarantee on a table of this cost is very poor as clearly this is a problem with inferior workmanship. Think very carefully before purchasing this table unless you can afford to replace on annual basis! Furniture equivalent of fast fashion but on this occasion not quite fast fashion price. AVOID !!!1
Table surface splintered and peeling away within a weekAnonymous reviewerI had this table delivered and assembled a week ago. The table top has splintered in a spot with the surface peeling away. Been unable to get through to IKEA over the call centre number (60 minute waiting time estimated) and I can't seem to find an email address.1
Sustainable bamboo tableAnonymous reviewerAbsolutely love this table, solid and beautiful design, and sustainable to boot! Also love the light colour of the bamboo.5
Good budget purchaseAnonymous reviewerLoooks amazing as long as you care for it. Kids have damaged with banging spoons but still value for money.5

VOXLÖV Dining table, light bamboo, 180x90 cm

Swaying bamboo becomes timeless furniture

Did you know that bamboo is actually a grass? After growing for some years, it becomes as hard as wood and at the same time stronger and more flexible than most types of wood. It’s also fast-growing and renewable. So, we headed out on a creative excursion to investigate the unique qualities of bamboo and to find out how to make the most out of it rather than copying wood. VOXLÖV dining table and chair is the first result.

Designer Francis Cayouette joined our bamboo-trip from the start and made some new discoveries. “When we use bamboo smart, according to its natural qualities, we can design shapes that are difficult to achieve with other materials.”

Bending shapes with flexible bamboo

Francis and the team used bamboo slats – thin layers of bamboo glued together in different dimensions. Thanks to the long fibre, bamboo is more flexible and easier to bend than most wood. “We explored different techniques to bend the bamboo and let the shapes become a part of the expression.” One challenge was to achieve just the right angle where the seat and backrest meet – with enough tilt and flexibility so that you can enjoy long meals at the dining table. “Bamboo behaves differently than wood, that was something we had to learn – and understand how to utilise. And, since the material is so hard, we could make the edge of the table really thin.”

A chair to linger in

Francis wanted the chair to feel strong and at the same time light and ”transparent”. “We tried with natural fibre on the seat and the backrest, but it made the chair look like a piece of outdoor furniture. Instead, we weaved twined paper cords by hand to get a built-in elasticity. It’s strong and has been used for years in furniture making.” The result is a chair just as flexible and soft as swaying bamboo – a comfortable place where good moments last longer.

Material

What is bamboo?

Strong, flexible and one of the world's fastest growing plants – bamboo has many uses that make it an excellent renewable material. It’s a type of grass and usually grows without the need for fertilizers or irrigation. After being harvested, it grows new shoots that are ready for harvesting after 4-6 years. At IKEA we use bamboo for items like furniture, bathroom decor, baskets and lamps – and we are constantly exploring more areas of use for this versatile material.
