Lovely chairAnonymous reviewerThis is a lovely chair that works really well in our kitchen diner. It’s low and wide and very stylish for the price. In fact I’m on the site now because I want to purchase a second one. Looking at the records it seems that it really is a lovely chair but there are quality control issues. I’m now a bit concerned to purchase another as I don’t know if I’ll get a lovely one or a damaged one! Yes rattan is a bit scratchy- we have two rattan bar stools (not IKEA) and the material is rougher (it’s not upholstery!) however we use seat pads and for the char I’ve got a gorgeous green sheepskin thrown over the back (because I don’t need it for the seat although it does work as a seat pad too). I am going to chance another one!

Rattan is a living material with a will of its own. That’s why we work together with experienced weavers who shape the rattan vines to functional products. The cooperation means you can have handmade furniture in your own home – created by man and nature together.
Rattan is a fast-growing palm tree that needs to be boiled and sun-dried before it can be tamed into different shapes that we can sit on, rest in, or decorate our homes with. This is where the weavers come in. “We wouldn’t be able to make authentic rattan products without them. They have skills that can’t be copied by machines”, says Andreas Fredriksson, who has designed some of our rattan furniture together with the artisans.

If rattan is treated right it can be transformed into almost anything, even furniture with generous forms that can fit in a flat pack. But the design is not only up to the designer and the artisan. “You have to cooperate with Mother Nature and come up with some new solutions as well – but the reward when you get everything to harmonise makes it worthwhile”, finishes Andreas.

What is rattan?
Rattan is a strong yet lightweight and flexible material made from the rattan plant’s stem. It can be used both whole and split into thinner materials that are braided into things like furniture and baskets. Rattan belongs to the palm family and climbs along trees, though no trees are required to be felled when the rattan cane is harvested. Since it is a natural material and the products are often handmade by skilled craftspeople, each object gets a completely unique look.
