Run a restaurant from home

Running a restaurant from your dining room isn’t as complicated as you might think. And, if you enjoy entertaining, it’s great fun! Here’s how Maria hosts like a professional in her own home.

A cosy setting creates a welcoming atmosphere


‘Presentation, food, table setting, conversation – they’re all parts of a whole,’ says Maria, who runs a catering business from her kitchen. ‘I like to lay a simple white table cloth, and change around the plates I use. Sometimes I use two service sets for one meal – mixing plain plates with patterned.’

Set up for sharing

‘Everything’s served at the table, so everyone can just help themselves. I bring out a few courses at a time, so dinners always end very late! And we always stay chatting at the table. It’s what I like best – sharing food, and sharing stories.’


‘The kitchen’s my favourite place,’ says Maria. ‘I spend hours and hours in there, and take my time preparing food, so it’s all laid out ready for when everyone arrives. Nobody’s allowed to help me in the kitchen – apart from my son, Antonio. All my guests need is a glass of wine!’
