Baking with kids (made simple)

Fall is a busy time for everyone, parents and kids alike. We know it can be hard, even intimidating, to make time for cooking activities. So we’ve got some straightforward, cool tips to get your kids cooking. We even brought in a couple to test (and approve) our ideas.

Half of the battle is being prepared. Super simple instructions (bonus points for adorable illustrations) help kids work through the recipe on their own. Save some time by making sure all of the ingredients and kitchen tools are laid out and ready to be used.

What’s this? How do you use that? Why do you need this thing? Kids are naturally curious in the kitchen, so why not let them handle a few things themselves? It’s a great time to use your kitchen tools creatively—we used this KONCIS garlic press for butter.

Cracking eggs can be disastrous for adults, let alone children. Here’s an easier (and more fun) way to do it: place a piece of tape at both ends of the egg and poke a hole in each end with a needle. Then gently blow the egg out of the shell and into a bowl. Make sure to save those shells so you can get creative with them later. Egg cups keep them stable while you’re drawing or painting silly faces.

Kids love sifting flour. You hate cleaning up the inevitable mini snowstorm. Our solution? Place the bowl inside a SAMLA box and contain that mess (this also works well when kids are pouring liquids like milk). You just cut a good chunk of time off your clean-up!

What’s more fun than hammering stuff? Pretty much nothing. As part of our quest to use everyday kitchen utensils in new ways, we decided to mash our bananas with a meat tenderizer. Placing them in a plastic bag keeps things clean, while a chopping board saves your countertop. 

We’re all about fun, packable lunches, like banana bread (especially when they’re in fun shapes). We thought pouring the batter directly into the cookie cutters would be quicker and easier than cutting out the shapes from finished bread. Well, we were wrong! As you can see, it got messy. Turns out some steps are totally necessary!

Face it... No one likes cleaning up. Especially kids. So make a game out of it! Set a timer to two minutes and dare them to beat the clock! They can throw all the baking tools back into the same SAMLA box they used for sifting flour. Now you can move everything to the sink at once and unload it into the dishwasher or let them soak in the box.
