How do we solve the problem of garbage that is astray and keep it away from seas, lakes, rivers and beaches? One way is of course to simply collect it and take care of it. But it’s easier said than done, especially if you, like Peter Bondesson, one of our purchasing experts, spend most of your working days in offices and factories and not at sea. To get some help on the way, Spanish fishers were involved.

From sea to home

The MUSSELBLOMMA collection celebrates the beauty in nature with a playful pattern and green and turquoise colours. It also decreases litter in the ocean. “The fishermen contribute to MUSSELBLOMMA with their catches. Sometimes they get more garbage than fish. It’s metal, rubber, glass, old shoes – you name it,” tells Peter. The fishers bring the garbage ashore where it’s cleaned and sorted. Some of it can be used to make yarn and new things like the polyester fabric in MUSSELBLOMMA. For every kilo waste that’s used to make the fabric, another nine kilos of garbage are taken out of the ocean.

From useless to useful

“At IKEA we have to take responsibility within the areas where we can make a difference,” says Peter. Turning something useless into something useful for the home is one way of doing it. “The goal is that all our products and packaging materials are based on renewable or recycled materials by 2030. MUSSELBLOMMA is a step on that journey. It shows that waste can be turned into valuable material for the future. Hopefully it’s also a step towards cleaner seas,” concludes Peter.

How to turn a bad catch into something good

MUSSELBLOMMA is inspired by the sea and made of things that don’t belong there. The collection consists of 100% recycled plastic. Some of it is caught by fishers in the Mediterranean Sea. For every kilo waste the fishers collect for MUSSELBLOMMA, another nine kilos of garbage are taken out of the ocean. It’s a step towards cleaner seas and it shows that waste in the wrong places can be turned from something useless into something useful.

Designer thoughts

“The plastic found in our seas is a major environmental problem and we all need to take responsibility to reach a solution. That’s why I’m really proud that some recycled plastic in the fabric for the MUSSELBLOMMA collection comes from PET bottles caught in Spanish fishermen's nets! The pattern is simple and modern with geometric figures and a fish-like shape – and everything in sea colours like green and turquoise with a splash of coral to make the pattern bright and happy."
