3 new buys celebrate rattan’s natural beauty

01-May-2019
Design using sustainably sourced, renewable natural materials is a trend for now – and the future. Three IKEA designers have created a trio of new pieces that bring the natural expression of classic rattan to life, with a modern twist.

Bring home the feel-good factor

Designers Andreas Fredriksson, Jonas Hultqvist and Willy Chong have created two chairs and a footstool that make the most of rattan’s unique qualities. “We’ve used the material in innovative ways, like combining it with metal frames on the ULRIKSBERG armchair, to create an airy feel. The chair also comes in flat packages, which is better for the environment and easier to take home and enjoy.”

Handcrafted design

The new BUSKBO armchair is the result of combining old traditions and modern design. Rattan is first boiled and sun-dried, then formed into different shapes by expert weavers. “We wouldn’t be able to make authentic rattan products without them. They have skills that can’t be copied by machines,” says Andreas.

Sustainable beauty

Rattan is a naturally occurring vine from the palm tree family. It grows rapidly on host trees and doesn’t require watering. This makes it a highly sustainable, renewable material.

Flexible furnishing

The cute new GAMLEHULT can be used as a footstool and a side table – it even has storage space designed into it. Rattan’s lightweight properties mean this versatile piece is also portable – easy to lift and carry to wherever you need it in your home.
Created in collaboration with experienced artisans, these three new rattan pieces are a chance to bring nature indoors and enjoy the feeling of handcrafted materials.
