Behind the design

A modern dresser for modern lives
Created to fit wherever it’s most practical (even in a small space). We’ve designed LIERSKOGEN by stripping dressing table design back to its most practical elements, leaving a full-length mirror, a place to hang clothes and storage for essentials.

Designed to de-stress the busiest starts

Have you ever had one of those mornings where you're rushing to get out the door and you realise you've forgotten something? It might be your keys, phone or just matching socks, but as the clock ticks on the more frustrating it can get, until you find yourself tearing through your home in bigger loops to find the elusive item.

The fact is life at home is getting busier as we fill more activities in the same number of hours. Finding a solution to stressful starts has been our starting point for the LIERSKOGEN valet stand with mirror. Designed to help you get dressed and start your day easier and more relaxed.

Research from life at home

Before materials are decided and designs are drawn, the first stage of a new IKEA product is to determine the best way it can help people at home. One of the ways we do that is through what we call the ‘Life at Home Report”. This report draws on interviews with thousands of people of all ages around the world. Catarina Olsson, the product developer of LIERSKOGEN explains that there were two findings from the report that they were paying close attention to when designing the new valet stand. “We can see it's a worldwide trend that people of all ages are getting busier,” Catarina says. “It’s becoming more common that both parents work, even kids have more activities.” The other finding was that an organised home could actually change our mood. 39% of people interviewed claimed their messy home irritates them once a week or more and 27% argue about tidying up once a week or more.

Designing for the smallest spaces

It also became clear that certain furniture designs didn’t always fit modern needs. “One of the things that is more obvious these days is that a lot of us don' t have time to sit down to get ready.” Catarina says. “So, we decided to make a new version of a dressing table that was very practical no matter your age or gender and that could fit in even a very small space.” Designing furniture for small rooms means you have to think a bit differently. You not only have to take into consideration the size of your furniture, but also how much room it takes to use it. Each door opened or drawer pulled out takes up more space. To reduce space, the design team concentrated on the important features they wanted to include with LIERSKOGEN, such as a full-length mirror, a place to hang clothes and storage for makeup and daily essentials. Then they removed space-filling elements such as a table or drawers.

Human friendly for all homes

The next stage of development was to test that LIERSKOGEN was user friendly for all types of people and homes. “When designing furniture you have to think about the human body and what is natural and easy to use,” Catarina says. “The mirror is a good example of this, we designed it so you can stand 50cm away and still see yourself top to toe. Then we tried it out with different sized colleagues, so that even if you're 2m you'll be able to see yourself fine.” The other focus was on making LIERSKOGEN versatile enough to fit as many spaces as possible. LIERSKOGEN has the option of being freestanding which gives you the freedom to put it anywhere, and is especially handy if you're not allowed to drill into your walls at home," Caterina says. "Or you can fix it to the wall which both makes the stand extra sturdy, and gives you extra hanging space for bulky items like winter coats."

A modern dresser for modern lives

At the end of the day, LIERSKOGEN is designed to help out with the beginning of your day. Even on those mornings where you have to wake up in the dark and get out the door fast with clothes neat, keys in hand and socks matching. We hope it makes a big difference to your morning routine.
