The IKEA 365+ series for food storage has been awarded one of the world's finest design awards – GOOD DESIGN. The flexible products are based on a unique platform concept with containers and lids in different sizes that can be combined in many ways. This makes it easier for you to take care of, store and find leftovers – and bring them with you on the go, while at the same time reducing unnecessary food waste. Good for the environment and for your wallet!

More IKEA 365+ food storage series

Helps you take care of food – and the planet

Around the world, a lot of food unnecessarily goes to waste every year. That's why we decided to contribute to reducing waste by making it easier for people to store and take care of their food at home. We visited families in several countries to find out what they need and then developed the IKEA 365+ series for food storage that makes it easier to store, save and bring food with you on the go.

You've just put leftovers after eating into a food container, but can't find a lid that fits. Maybe you have to move the food from a food container to another one in order to take it to work and wonder if it's really worth the extra effort doing the dishes later. Or maybe you've put a food container in the fridge with food in it, but since it's not transparent you can't see what's inside the food container and completely forget about the food. Maybe you can relate to these situations? Nevertheless, these were things we heard time and time again when we interviewed families about their experiences with storing, saving and bringing food with them to places like work. − Many people think it's a bit of a pain to take care of their food and that's why we wanted to develop a series to make it easier. The series should be simple, flexible and have versatile products which can be combined and used in ways that suit every household, says David Granath, a product developer at IKEA who has worked with the project.

Easier to take care of food

But let's take it from the beginning. The exact figures vary, but we know that a lot of food is thrown away every day around the world. Food which has been produced, transported, bought, brought home – and which is fully edible. That this is a huge waste of resources is no secret, but it still continues day after day, year after year. Why? That's exactly what we wanted to find out. - We realised that we didn't know enough, so we took the help of an external research agency and carried out home visits to families in France, China, Russia and Germany, says David Granath.

Flow without extra work

The interviews showed that the flow of food storage must be simple. The entire chain of events, from raw materials being brought home, to the food being cooked, eaten, saved and maybe becoming a lunch box, needs to flow together smoothly. − It can involve things like using the same food container for several steps and just changing the lid. There shouldn't be any unnecessary extra work along the way, says David Granath. It's important that the food containers are transparent since this increases the chance that the food is fully consumed. And it must be easy to adapt the food containers to serve different needs. − People asked for a coherent system for food storage. Not complicated special gadgets, yet rather simple and straightforward products that can be used often, and without needing instructions, says David Granath.

Smart and super simple

The result? Our IKEA 365+ series for food storage, a group of food containers and lids which can be combined and also come in different materials and sizes. It's not the most advanced products we've made. On the contrary. They are super simple – and that's the point. - We've put a lot of work into them, for example by seeing to it that all the different parts fit together. But the product itself is simple in a smart way, which I think is typical IKEA. Now we've taken the first step on a continuing journey, says David Granath. Of course we are proud of ourselves if we can contribute to reducing food waste. It's good for every home and also for our planet. We can't solve the entire problem – but we can make it possible for you to be part of the solution.
