The sleeper sofa with space for your life
When starting to develop FLOTTEBO sleeper sofa, we looked a little beyond the traditional sofa bed. We saw it more as a convenient and ever-changing place with space for your life. A place where you can work, enjoy a coffee, watch a movie and sleep so that everyone in the home has space for their needs and interests. We found ideas and inspiration in all kinds of places – like the beds department, on the underside of our bath mats and on motorcycle gloves.
The living room is constantly changing in character. In recent years, life and activities happening there have undergone quite large changes. Today the room is of a more fluid nature where someone might be watching a movie while another works on their laptop or does homework. This is according to Christina Halskov and Hanne Dalsgaard, the designers behind FLOTTEBO sleeper sofa. "That's why we needed a sleeper sofa that is more like a platform for all these activities and which works in many different homes", Christina summarizes.
Both a sofa and a bed
Together with engineers and product developers, Christina and Hanne started to brainstorm and sketch. The work took time since they wanted to make a completely new type of sleeper sofa but it couldn't be too expensive, so the focus was on thinking smart and outside the box in order to keep the price down. "Traditional sleeper sofas look a certain way during the day and in a different way in the evening when they're transformed for sleeping, but we wanted FLOTTEBO to have the same appearance and be comfortable enough to both sit on and sleep on", says Christina. At the beds department, the team found the basis behind the pocket spring mattress and the frame, which have both been adapted to their new roles in a sleeper sofa. Under the mattress and frame, space was made for storage. "Many people have limited space and a great need for storage. Here was a hidden space which we were able to take advantage of,” explains Christina.
Removable back cushions stay in place
A challenge that required a lot of tests and prototypes was the back cushions. In the end, the final choice fell on loose cushions which you can easily move depending on how you want to sit – straight or sideways, deep or further forward. "They gave the sleeper sofa the flexibility we were looking for. But it was important that the cushions didn't slide away when leaning your weight against them,” explains Christina. The engineer in the team, Zubair Mahmood, describes how these types of challenges often get solved by brainstorming together. "To find a solution, we looked at things like bath mats and motorcycle gloves, or more specifically, the surface underneath which provides a good grip, says Zubair, and shows how you can now lift the mattress up to access the storage space without the cushions sliding off. The designer Christina wants all of these features to contribute to everyone being able to make FLOTTEBO into a personal sleeper sofa. "I hope it’s embraced into many different homes and fulfils different dreams, wherever you're living in the world."
