    Let’s build a world where everyone can feel at home

    2SLGBTQ+ inclusion is a topic very close to our hearts. At IKEA, we have always stood for ‘the many people’, an idea that does not discriminate. We want people of all sexual orientations and gender identities to feel at home, not just at IKEA, but everywhere.

    To mark this year’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on the 17th of May and Pride celebrations throughout the summer months, we want to acknowledge the progress that’s been made on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion and talk about the steps we all can take to push progress further.

    In an effort to be more inclusive of all 2SLGBTQ+ people, within and outside IKEA, we are adopting the Pride Progress Flag. The flag includes black and brown stripes to represent 2SLGBTQ+ communities of colour, as well as pink, light blue and white to represent the transgender community. To us, flying the Pride Progress Flag is more than symbolic. It’s a reminder that progress still needs to be made so that all people within the 2SLGBTQ+ community are treated equally and fairly.

    Steps we can all take to make progress

    How do you help build a world where everyone can feel at home?

    We all have the power to push progress a little bit further and help the whole 2SLGBTQ+ community feel welcome and respected – at home, at work and out in the world. Check out the tips below to see if there are any ways you can make progress in your everyday life.

    Call it out

    Hear something that sounds disrespectful? Speak up and kindly explain why it’s not okay to speak that way, or why you find it troubling. If that feels too difficult, tell someone who will speak up on your behalf. We all need to stand against discrimination and hate, even when it’s uncomfortable.

    Use inclusive language

    Don’t make assumptions about someone’s gender, sexual orientation, or relationship. Use language that acknowledges that we have diverse relationships and families. This can mean using gender-neutral words like ‘partner’ or ‘parents’.

    Respect the pronouns people use (she, they, he, etc.)

    The pronouns we use are tied to our deepest sense of self and how we want the world to recognize us. When someone shares their pronouns with you, respect them and use them. Using the wrong pronouns (misgendering) can be insulting and harmful.

    Make a habit of sharing your pronouns

    Have you thought about changing your email signature or your social media bio to show your personal pronouns? This is a great way to be an ally to the 2SLGBTQ+ community and make conversations about pronouns more commonplace. It’s a small step that can make life feel more welcoming and inclusive to all.

    Pronouns for French Canadians

    For our French communities, we recognize the limitations that come with the gendered nature of the French language. While there is no perfect solution, the French language continues to evolve and we encourage you to get curious about non-binary pronouns, get creative to make your words more inclusive and engage in meaningful conversations so that we can work towards a more inclusive future.

    Own up to mistakes

    We all mess up sometimes. If you make an incorrect assumption about someone, or refer to them by the wrong pronoun, or accidentally use an inappropriate or offensive term, acknowledge your mistake. If you’re corrected, you can thank the person who corrected you for giving constructive feedback.

    Read up and stay curious

    If you want to know more about 2SLGBTQ+ issues, there’s a wealth of information out there. Look for the answers you need online or respectfully ask people you know from 2SLGBTQ+ communities for their views and perspectives. Being informed is an important step towards being inclusive.

    Ask questions respectfully

    Curiosity is a good thing, but make sure it’s balanced with respect for privacy. Put yourself in other people’s shoes and don’t ask overtly personal questions that you wouldn’t want to answer yourself.

    Get involved

    Sign a petition. Join a virtual event. Look into your local 2SLGBTQ+ volunteering opportunities or show your support though donations. We’ve made lots of progress on 2SLGBTQ+ equality, but there’s still lots more each and every one of us can do.

    Progress we’ve made

    IKEA Canada is committed to an inclusive and accepting environment for all customers and co-workers. Here are some of the initiatives we’ve supported:

    • For the past four years, IKEA Canada has raised a Pride flag at units across the country in recognition of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. This year, all IKEA Canada units will raise either the Rainbow Flag or Pride Progress Flag on May 17th for IDAHOT.
    • IKEA Canada is once again a proud sponsor of Pride Toronto, helping to furnish safe spaces that will support community for Pride 2021 and years to come.
    • IKEA Canada has partnered with organizations like Pride at Work and Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion to create a fully inclusive work environment where collective diversity allows IKEA to foster important conversations from an intersectional perspective, recognizing unique life experiences.
    • For the past three years, IKEA Canada has donated the proceeds of its STORSTOMMA bags to 2SLGBTQ+ organizations that benefit the local community, including Pflag Canada. This year, proceeds will go to select 2SLGBTQ+ organizations across Canada that push progress forward and create safe spaces in their local communities.

    For IKEA Canada, creating a welcoming, safe and accepting environment is part of our vision to create a better everyday life for all Canadians. That’s why in 2021, we’re committed to furthering the education of our co-workers by offering trainings about inclusion, unconscious bias and 2SLGBTQ+ issues to make sure that they are allies too. We’ll also educate our co-workers on the use of inclusive pronouns and launch a new Transgender Inclusion initiative to ensure we continue to create a trans-inclusive workplace and trans-inclusive teams.

    Carry with pride

    Since 2019, STORSTOMMA has been sold in more than 26 countries, with a portion of proceeds going directly to local 2SLGBTQ+ organisations fighting for equality. Show your support for a world where everyone can feel at home with this rainbow-coloured carrier bag and join over 3.5 million proud bag carriers around the world! This year, proceeds will go to select 2SLGBTQ+ organizations across Canada that push progress forward and create safe spaces in their local communities including: Ten Oaks Project, Friends of Ruby, Pride Centre of Edmonton, Skipping Stone, Rainbow Resource Centre, QMUNITY, The Youth Project, and Fondation Émergence.
