LET'S HEAR IT FROM THE KIDS!

What connects Eva in Sweden, Zubair in Pakistan and Inès in Ivory Coast? Their right to a secure childhood with access to a good education.

It’s 5.07pm in Malmö, Sweden

‘I’m Eva. I’m seven years old. I like riding my bike, treasure hunts and craftwork. On winter evenings it gets dark early and I can’t go outside to play. Mum has been to IKEA and bought me a new lamp. It’s called SUNNAN and it is very special because it’s solar powered. Tonight, I’m making a chain of paper children...’

Making a difference
‘The SUNNAN solar-powered lamp can provide up to four hours of light,’ explains Marianne Barner, head of IKEA Social Initiative. ‘IKEA Social Initiative donates one lamp to UNICEF for each one sold in IKEA stores worldwide. The first shipment is going to children in Pakistan living without electrcity.’

‘At IKEA, we believe every child has the right to an education, healthcare and a childhood of excitement and wonder. It’s not a new desire. In 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.’

‘The IKEA Social Initiative supports projects run by UNICEF and Save the Children, the two leading global organisations for children’s rights. The aim is to give children a better start in life.’

20 November 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the landmark decision by the world to put children’s rights on the global agenda
