Help bring a little light in the dark for those in need
Spotlight on children
Starting June 1, 2009- for each SUNNAN solar cell powered lamp you buy, we'll donate one to UNICEF. These environmentally friendly lamps will go to children in developing countries, so they can read, write and study after sunset, even if their homes have no electricity.

In addition to doing something great for kids- you'll be helping the environment and your pocket book. These lamps come with two rechargeable AA 1.2V batteries for solar cell driven products, so all you have to do it give it sun. No plug in required. No cost on your electric bill. No CO2 emissions. Now that is what you call a BRIGHT idea!

I'm a tree hugger!
IKEA Celebrates1 million trees planted in the USA!
IKEA is celebrating a major milestone in its collaboration with American Forests & our customers - together we’ve planted 1 million trees! These trees will help to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, provide wildlife habitat & protect against soil erosion.

Did you donate a $1 for American Forests at IKEA Woodbridge? Here’s just one example of how your donation helped our Northern Virginia community!

Sustainable Forest Establishment in PA - 3,215 trees The clearcutting of a hardwood forest along a ridgetop in Susquehannock State Forest in 2004 left the area vulnerable to heavy deer browsing and dense grass growth. Those factors are keeping the hardwoods from reestablishing and foresters fear a change in dominant tree species from northern hardwoods to soft maples as a result.

American Forests partnered with the Hardwood Forestry Fund to plant 15,275 black cherry and northern red oak seedlings and erect a fence to protect them from deer. The fence will be removed once the seedlings are well established. A regeneration harvest will be conducted from 2107 to 2127 to ensure successful seedling regeneration.
Environmental Efforts
IKEA Helping To Save The Environment
IKEA's goal is to help create a better everyday life for the many people. Part of this commitment involves being a socially responsible company.

Reducing energy consumption and the dangers of hazardous emissions harming the atmospher. IKEA however, is taking action! Selling alternative compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs over less energy effcient lighting, such as incandescent bulbs, is one of the major strategies IKEA is implementing.

CFL bulbs last on average 10 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb and saves 80% more energy. So, although CFL bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the investment pays off in the long run because there is alot more energy saved. Along with the lower energy costs CFL bulbs emit fewer greenhouse gases into the environment. They also stay much cooler, which makes them safer for children.

Recycling our CFL bulbs
IKEA is one of the only retailers partnering with local recycling companies to properly recycle the mercury content from CFL bulbs and all other electrical equipment to avoid any environmental contamination. These bulbs require special disposal, and we'll do that for you free of charge.

IKEA Recycles, So Can You! Stop by our Recycling Center next to the Swede Shop located across from the cash lanes.

Purchase our 3/pk of SPARSAM energy saving bulbs for $3.99 and save money and the environment.

Bag The Plastic
IKEA is charging 5 cents for every "throw away" plastic bag. All proceeds* from the first year of this program will be donated to the American Forests, the nations oldest non-profit conservation organization, to plant trees and offset the CO2 emissions. Purchase the IKEA Blue Bag for only 59 cents.

*A maximum contribution of $1,750,000 within 12 months

No more bags
No more disposable plastic bags!
IKEA no longer offers disposable plastic bags in our stores. Next time you visit us, please bring your own reusable bags or simply carry out your products. No worries, we still have our reusable blue bag for 59¢.

Why did IKEA do this? Because every small green step helps! According to the Environmental Protection Agency: ● The U.S. consumes over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks & wraps each year ● Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags and less than 1% of them are recycled. ● The average plastic bags takes 1,000 years to photo degrade, which means they do not fully decompose. So, we're saying no more. Join us with our efforts!
