IKEA is celebrating one-million trees planted!
On October 17th, IKEA is celebrating a major milestone in its partnership with American Forests and our customers - together we’ve planted one-million trees! These trees will help to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, provide wildlife habitat and protect against soil erosion.

Tree Hugger Day Photo Contest:
As part of the celebration of Tree Hugger Day this October 17th, AMERICAN FORESTS is pleased to announce our first ever Tree Hugger Day photo contest. What do you do? It’s simple: Hug a tree, and take a picture!

That’s right. We want you to take a picture of yourself, your friends, your family, or anyone else that participates in Tree Hugger Day while they’re hugging away. Hug any tree, large or small, young or old, the one in the park across town, or the one in your front yard. Your submission can be simple or elaborate, light-hearted or serious, a group photo or a solo shot – be creative! The only requirement is that you capture tree hugging in action. Then, e-mail a photo by November 1st to be eligible for prizes and recognition. See link below for more details and contest guidelines.

Plant a tree
Donate $1 Plant 1 Tree
IKEA is partnering with American Forest, a nonprofit group that is dedicated to preserving and restoring forests in the United States and around the world.

With every $1 you donate at the cashlanes 1 tree will be planted that will help restore forests throughout the U.S.

Trees – through their natural growth processes – remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and convert carbon into wood. Planting trees is a low-cost, practical and effective way to store carbon and reducing CO2. This means a cleaner, cooler atmosphere for all life on earth. Want more information? Visit www.americanforests.org.

SOLAR ENERGIZED!
Millions of children can’t draw, write or read after sunset. So we want to help children in need. For every SUNNAN solar lamp sold, IKEA will donate another to UNICEF with the aim to improve children’s education.

You can help make a difference! Together, we can provide reading lights for children who have no electricity at home and thereby give them a means to better support their education.

The rechargeable batteries in SUNNAN solar cell lamps provide light with energy from the sun for two years. The SUNNAN lamps become small but an important contribution to improving the lives of children in developing countries. Buy a SUNNAN lamp today!

Our Partner Charity, Free Arts of Arizona
Free Arts of Arizona is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the creative arts to abused, neglected, homeless, and at risk children throughout the Valley. Activities involving visual arts, music, theater, dance and creative writing provide these children with outlets to express complex emotions and give them a personal voice. This creative expression has been shown to help develop self-esteem, imagination, and social skills that are invaluable later in life.

The greatest thing about Free Arts of Arizona is that they are the only program in Maricopa County that exists solely to work in connecting many non-profits that serve these children.

IKEA believes it can achieve business objectives while being socially and environmentally responsible. Through wide-ranging initiatives, IKEA reflects this commitment to being a good business while doing good business. From the very beginning of our existence, IKEA Tempe's goal was to be dedicated to giving back to the local community and sticking to IKEA's vision "to create a better everyday life for the many," we knew aligning with a partner charity of choice that felt the same was important. Through a rigorous review of all the great organizations here in the Valley along with keeping in mind that our core area of concentration nationally was to help children, we felt being able to work with Free Arts of Arizona would be a good fit so we invited them to take us on as a corporate supporter!

IKEA also believes that children are the most important people in the world. Nationally, we have decided to focus our activities in the local community on helping children achieve their fullest potential by supporting their learning and development because helping children to learn and develop is an area in which IKEA has experience and can make a difference.

IKEA encourages all stores to take social responsibility seriously at local level by participating in different activities to support selected projects, and here in Arizona, we truly believe in the work that Free Arts of Arizona is doing to improve the lives of children in need. It's exciting to know that our relationship is helping to create a better everyday life for the thousands of children who participate in their programming!

Blue + Yellow = GREEN
As of October 1, 2008, IKEA no longer offers plastic bags. With the introduction of its leadership ‘bag the plastic bag’ program in March 2007, IKEA set a goal of reducing its U.S. stores’ plastic bag consumption by 50%; from 70 million to 35 million plastic bags in the first year.

Now it’s over a year since the program began and IKEA is overwhelmed with the stunning results; more than 92% of their customers said no more plastic bags! Expectations were exceeded and IKEA learned their customers welcome the opportunity to find new ways to be environmentally responsible.

Here are three simple ways to go green with IKEA Tempe:
- Use compact fluorescent lights (CFL) light bulbs
- Reduce plastic bag usage
- Recycle your non-fluorescent light bulbs, plastic bottles, clear plastic bags, and aluminum cans.

Why use CFL light bulbs?
• The more CFL bulbs you use, the more money you save; CFL bulbs last 6-10X longer!
• Lowers the usage of energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Did you know that if every U.S. home bought one CFL bulb, it would be the equivalent to taking two-million cars off the road!
Solution: Purchase CFL light bulbs from IKEA Tempe.

Why reduce plastic bag use?
• Average family of four accumulates 1,460 plastic shopping bags a year.
• 100 billion plastic bags are given away each year in the U.S.
• Takes up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag to break down in the environment.
Solution: Buy a large reusable shopping bag from IKEA for only 59¢.

Did you know that you can recycle many things at IKEA Tempe?
Solution: Our store has THREE recycling centers (in the AS-IS department, in the Customer Service department on your way out of the cash lanes by the exit area and in the Lighting department) for you to deposit your non-fluorescent light bulbs, plastic bottles, clear plastic bags, and aluminum cans.

Need to replace what you just recycled? Our thoughts... SPARSAM, 11-watt compact fluorescent, three-pack - only $4.99.
IKEA has UTZ Certified coffee!
We want you to know that the coffee you drink at IKEA is made in a responsible manner – for the earth and for our people.

Why certified coffee? We sell and serve a lot of coffee every day, and want you to know that it was produced in a responsible and sustainable way. That is why we have decided that all coffee at IKEA shall be UTZ Certified and traceable all the way back to the plantations.

What is UTZ Certified? UTZ Certified is an independent not-for profit organization that sets a standard for responsible coffee growing and sourcing. UTZ Certified has a broad approach to sustainability, taking both people and the environment into consideration.

Trace your coffee! The taste and quality is always the same for each IKEA coffee variety. But the plantations the beans derive from may vary from one package to another. Click the link below, follow the instructions and you’ll find out exactly which plantations your coffee originates from, and get to know a lot about them.
