IKEA celebrates 1 million trees planted!
On October 17th, IKEA reaches a major milestone in its partnership with American Forests and our customers - together we’ve planted 1 million trees! These trees will help to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, provide wildlife habitat and protect against soil erosion.

IKEA and UNICEF Lighten Up Children’s Lives in the Developing World
Now at IKEA stores worldwide, for every SUNNAN solar-powered lamp sold, one lamp will be given to UNICEF to light up the life of a child.

The first shipments of donated lights are destined for Pakistan, helping children in camps for people who had to flee their homes, and remote villages in Balochistan and the North West Frontier province. This unit will enable children to play, read, write and study at night, even if their homes have no electricity. Millions of children can’t draw, write or read after sunset, limiting their horizons and possibly their futures. IKEA hopes our lamps are a small but important contribution to improving the lives of children in developing countries.

IKEA has made an especially sturdy SUNNAN for the developing world, designed to resist the wear and tear of difficult living situations, including a battery capable of withstanding high temperatures.

Priced at only $19.99, SUNNAN comes in five bright colors and is available in the lighting department at IKEA Seattle. SUNNAN work lamp combines low-energy LED technology with solar panels. Just charge the panel for 9-12 hours in the sun and get four hours of full light!

Help us in our efforts to light up children's lives by purchasing a SUNNAN work lamp at IKEA Seattle today!

New Recycle Center
Come see our new Recycle Center, now with Styrofoam Recycling!
***********Please note!***************
Until further notice, IKEA has suspended the recycling service to take back used batteries.

This is due to the challenges of a new regulation issued by the US Department of Transportation (US DOT) regarding the transport of batteries.

Have you visited IKEA Seattle recently? Then you've probably had the opportunity to check out our new recycle center, located in the main garage, just to the left of the entrance to our Customer Service department.

We’ve dedicated this special area as a collection point for our customers to bring their IKEA cardboard boxes and used bulbs for recycling at IKEA. And in addition to those items, we’ve just recently added the capability of recycling stryofoam, in partnership with V&G Styro Recycle. Bring your #6 styrofoam here to IKEA Seattle and drop it off at the recycle center and it will be ground up, compressed and then densified into blocks, which are then manufactured into commonly used plastic products such as picture frames, TV and computer monitor casings, office equipment and much more! (Please note, styrofoam recycling is only available at IKEA Seattle location.)

So don’t forget, when you visit IKEA Seattle, bring your used bulbs, IKEA cardboard boxes and styrofoam and drop it off at the new recycle center! Thanks for helping us do our part for the environment, and keep these items out of our landfills.

IKEA is bagless!
As of October 1, 2008, IKEA no longer offers plastic bags! Please remember to bring your own reuseable bags with you when you shop at IKEA Seattle, or purchase one of our iconic IKEA blue bag for only 59¢. when you bring it back and reuse it again at IKEA, we'll take 25¢ off your bill! that pays for your bag in about 2 visits!

It's a dialogue we hear everyday. Can we? Do we? Will we really change our behavior to be environmentally responsible? IKEA believed we could and would. With the introduction of its leadership ‘Bag the Plastic Bag’ program in March 2007, IKEA set a goal of reducing its U.S. stores’ plastic bag consumption by 50%; from 70 million to 35 million plastic bags in the first year. The call was to go reusable with the iconic IKEA blue bag for $.59 or use an alternative reusable bag.

And IKEA also said if that was not an acceptable solution, IKEA plastic bags could be purchased for five-cents, with all proceeds going to American Forests (the nation’s oldest non-profit citizen’s conservation organization) to plant trees to restore forests and help reduce CO2 emissions.

Now it’s over a year since the program began and IKEA is overwhelmed with the stunning results; more than 92% of their customers said no more plastic bags! Expectations were exceeded and IKEA learned their customers welcome the opportunity to find new ways to be environmentally responsible.

This landmark program has now resulted in IKEA taking another step forward; as of October 1, 2008, IKEA will no longer offer plastic bags, and paper bags are not available in IKEA stores either. IKEA’s consumer call-to-action is to use only reusable bags.

And according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. consumes over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps each year. Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags, and less than one percent of them are recycled. The average plastic bags takes 1000 years to photo degrade, which means they do not fully decompose.

environmental efforts
IKEA's Environmental Efforts
IKEA's goal is to help create a better everyday life for the many people. Part of this commitment involves being a socially responsible company.

IKEA always strives to minimize any negative environmental effects of our business, and CFL bulbs are just one more way. Today everybody is talking about energy consumption and the dangers of hazardous emissions harming the atmosphere. IKEA, however, isn’t just sitting back talking about it, we’re taking action! Promoting alternative compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs over less energy efficient lighting, such as incandescent bulbs, is one of the major strategies IKEA is implementing.

A CFL bulb lasts on average 10 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb and saves 80% more energy. So, although CFL bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the investment pays off in the long run because there’s a lot more energy saved. Along with lower energy costs CFL bulbs emit fewer greenhouse gases into the environment. These bulbs stay much cooler than other lighting sources, which makes it safer for children. Other benefits include being well-suited for utility areas where light is on for long periods of time, and for aesthetics.

While everyone is now selling these energy-efficient bulbs, IKEA is unique in a few ways:
Lowest mercury levels
IKEA has one of the lowest mercury levels in CFL bulbs on the global market and we plan to lower the level even more. Our ultimate goal is to create CFL bulbs without any mercury content, which is anticipated in 5-10 years.

Recycling our CFL bulbs
We’re one of the only retailers partnering with local recycling companies to properly recycle the mercury content from CFL bulbs and all other electrical equipment to avoid any environmental contamination. These bulbs require special disposal, and we'll do that for you free of charge.

What else can you recycle at IKEA?
Well, pretty much everything. Be sure to stop by our Recycling Center located by Returns and Exchanges to recycle light bulbs, all plastic and styrofoam. Please note, we can no longer accept batteries for recycling. This is due to the challenges of a new regulation issued by the US Department of Transportation (US DOT) regarding the transport of batteries.
You may also bring cans, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard to recycle in our recycling bins located outside the store exit.

Check out our 3/pk of SPARSAM energy saving bulbs for $3.99, and save money while you help the evironment!
