IKEA Portland Environmental Efforts

IKEA is Celebrating
1-Million Trees Planted!
On October 17th IKEA is celebrating a major milestone in its partnership with American Forests and our customers - together we’ve planted 1 million trees! These trees will help to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, provide wildlife habitat and protect against soil erosion.

As a customer, you can plant trees by adding $1 per tree to your total purchase at the check-outs. IKEA will match your donation for the first 100,000 trees planted! Buy one tree or buy 20! Right now at IKEA Portland, while supplies last- buy at least $5 in trees and you'll get a FREE IKEA water bottle!

The Never Ending Job...
We have decided to help create a world where we take better care of the environment, the earth's resources, and each other. We know that sometimes we are part of the problem. So, we are working hard to become a part of the solution. We are weighing the pros and cons, continually examining and changing things. All these steps, in lots and lots of areas, add up to something big.. and noticeable. The job has already started, and it is a never-ending one.

IMPROVEMENT #1: When we design IKEA packaging, pretty is not our top priority. We don't design flatpacks to sell more but to save more. Flatpacks mean optimized loads and reduced transport with fewer emissions. Our use of recyclable packaging requiring minimal raw material helps, too. We feel brown cardboard is one of our best friends - it saves costs and the environment.

IMPROVEMENT #9: NORDEN table in birch. Introduced in 1998, it was probably the first time anyone had thought of making furniture also from the knotty top part of the birch tree instead of burning it as firewood or grinding it for chipboard production.

IMPROVEMENT #18: The cotton in DVALA bedlinen, called "Better Cotton" is grown in a more sustainable way, using substantially less water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Not only that, the fabric is woven using 15% less cotton but still feels just as good as comparable bedlinen.

IMPROVEMENT #36: SPARSAM low energy bulbs are a great alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs. They last ten times longer and the energy consumption is reduced by up to 80% over the bulb's lifetime. One 20-watt bulb provides as much light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb, without getting anywhere near as hot. IKEA will phase out incandescent bulbs in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives before Sept. 1, 2010. SPARSAM has a new 3-year limited warranty. IKEA customers can return low energy bulbs to the store for recycling.

IMPROVEMENT #44: At IKEA, we hate waste! This is why we take every opportunity to turn spill from production into raw material for other products. LUSY BLOM cushion is one good example. It is filled with leftovers from IKEA comforter production, so we can make sure the content is safe and healthy as well as making use of the material that would otherwise be wasted.

the never ending job

Good for the Environment
Spotlight On Children
Help bring a little light in the dark for those in need.

For each SUNNAN solar cell powered lamp you buy, we donate one to UNICEF. These environmentally friendly lamps will go to children in developing countries, so they can read, write and study after sunset, even if their homes have no electricity.

In addition to doing something great for kids- you'll be helping the environment and your pocket book. These lamps come with two rechargeable AA 1.2V batteries for solar cell driven products, so all you have to do it give it sun. No plug in required. No cost on your electric bill. No CO2 emissions. They're great for camping in the woods and the back yard too!
Now that is what you call a BRIGHT idea!

IKEA Portland
Green from the Ground Up!
Did you know that IKEA Portland is LEED Certified?! LEED is an acronym of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Created by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED measures green building performance. Click on the LEED Walking Guide below to see some of the green highlights in the building - like our "Eco Home" the Showroom, our proximity to the MAX light rail station and the IKEA Restaurant's aggressive composting program.

Don't forget- IKEA Portland recycles. Bring in your CFL bulbs and we'll recycle them for you- even if you didn't buy them here. You'll find our recycling centers in our Lighting Department and just inside the exit door across from Returns & Exchanges.
