Sustainability & Community

To us it’s about taking care of people and the planet – from tackling the problem of children living in poverty to creating renewable energy. Our co-workers, suppliers and partners have been working on these issues and more for a while. You can see evidence of this work through innovative IKEA products and solutions, and through the way we do business. If we all take small actions, we can all contribute to big results.
Live a more sustainable life at home
There are many small ways to save the planet that add up to big results. Here are some our favorite products to help you live a more sustainable life at home!
Saving water every time you turn on the faucet
All of our faucets use up to 50% less water than an older faucet. They have a simple water saving device that reduces the water flow (but without you noticing any difference)

Tracing how good your coffee is before the very first sip
When you buy coffee from our Swedish Food Market, you can trace where it comes from. Just visit and enter the "best before" date to find out exactly where your beans are from. You can also learn more about the lives of the people who helped grow them.

KIVIK loveseat
Cotton that's better for farmers, their children and the environment
IKEA is embracing a better way to produce cotton. Working together with partners such as the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and WWF has enabled more than 100,000 cotton farmers to significantly reduce water, chemical pesticide and fertilizer use, while increasing their earnings. By 2015 we want all the cotton we use to be produced this way. Through the IKEA Foundation we also work closely with Save the Children and UNICEF to give at least 16 million children in cotton growing communities better opportunities in life.

We're changing our light bulbs so you'll rarely have to
By 2016 we'll switch all the lamps and light bulbs we sell to LED. Why? Because LED is the most energy-efficient lighting there is. It uses 85% less energy and lasts 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Imagine if we all made the switch to LED? Together we'd save a lot of money on electricity and a lot of energy!

IKEA Pittsburgh now has a solar energy system!
As part of our commitment to sustainability, IKEA has installed a new solar energy system atop this store. The 86,800 square foot array consists of a 694-kW system, built with approximately 2,884 panels.

The IKEA Pittsburgh solar program will produce approximately 852,200 kWh of clean electricity annually - the equivalent of reducing 648 tons of carbon dioxide, eliminating the emissions of 115 cars or powering 73 homes yearly.
Cheer us on in the Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge!
IKEA Pittsburgh is competing with other area businesses in the Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge. This friendly competition helps businesses learn how to be more sustainable over the course of the year. The Challenge began on July 31st and continues until May 31, 2014.
IKEA Pittsburgh Giving Guidelines
Creating a Better Everyday Life!

Our IKEA global vision is to create a better everyday life for the many. To this end, we have long-standing partnerships with UNICEF, Save the Children and American Forest, to impact the health, safety, education and well being of children in need, as well as, minimizing our impact to the environment.

Due to the overwhelming number of donation requests, our giving is very focused. While we wish we could support all worthy organizations, we simply cannot. Please understand that although your organization may fit one or more of the three requirements, it is not a guarantee that your request will be honored.
