Spotlight on Children
Help bring a little light in the dark for those in need.

For each SUNNAN solar cell powered lamp you buy, we'll donate one to UNICEF. These environmentally friendly lamps will go to children in developing countries, so they can read, write and study after sunset, even if their homes have no electricity.

In addition to doing something great for kids- you'll be helping the environment and your pocket book. These lamps come with two rechargeable AA 1.2V batteries for solar cell driven products, so all you have to do it give it sun. No plug in required. No cost on your electric bill. No CO2 emissions. Now that is what you call a BRIGHT idea!
IKEA Paramus' Event to Benefit Locks of Love Was a Huge Success!
We would like to thank all of the people that participated in our hair donation event on 2/14 to benefit Locks of Love. Locks of Love which began operation in 1998, provides the prostheses to children under 18, every 18 months for a total of up to 8 hairpieces. Locks of Love hairpieces require between 6-10 ponytails and take approximately 4-6 month to manufacture. They meet a unique need for children by using donated human hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. The prostheses they provide help to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling these children to face the world and their peers.

Here's a couple of fun facts from our event:

~Total hair donation: 505.75" of hair (exceeded goal of 500 inches)
~Total number of donors: 34
~Youngest donor: 6
~Longest hair donation: 25 inches - recipient of $50 IKEA gift card

We would also like to thank the Parisian Beauty Academy (Hackensack, NJ) for their integral role in our event...cutting the hair and giving each donor a new hairstyle. They handled the constant flow of donors with such professionalism. We also hope the donors enjoyed their bottle of Kristian Regale and a complimentarty meal for two in our IKEA restaurant.

Due to the success, we will be making this an annual event.

Going Bagless at IKEA
Blue + Yellow = Green
As of October 1, 2008, IKEA no longer offers plastic bags. The offering will only be our iconic IKEA blue bag for only $.59 or use an alternative reusable bag from home.

It's a dialogue we hear everyday. Can we? Do we? Will we really change our behavior to be environmentally responsible? IKEA believed we could and would. With the introduction of its leadership ‘Bag the Plastic Bag’ program in March 2007, IKEA set a goal of reducing its U.S. stores’ plastic bag consumption by 50%; from 70 million to 35 million plastic bags in the first year. The call was to go reusable with the iconic IKEA blue bag for $.59 or use an alternative reusable bag.

And IKEA also said if that was not an acceptable solution, IKEA plastic bags could be purchased for five-cents, with all proceeds going to American Forests (the nation’s oldest non-profit citizens conservation organization) to plant trees to restore forests and help reduce CO2 emissions.

Now it’s over a year since the program began and IKEA is overwhelmed with the stunning results; more than 92% of their customers said no more plastic bags! Expectations were exceeded and IKEA learned their customers welcome the opportunity to find new ways to be environmentally responsible.

And according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. consumes over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps each year. Each year, Americans throw away some 100 billion polyethylene plastic bags, and less than one percent of them are recycled.
