1 Million Trees Planted!
On October 17th IKEA is celebrating a major milestone in its partnership with American Forests and our customers - together we’ve planted 1 million trees! These trees will help to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming, provide wildlife habitat and protect against soil erosion.

As a customer, you can plant trees by adding $1 per tree to your total purchase at the check-outs. IKEA will match your donation for the first 100,000 trees planted! Buy one tree or buy 20!
Spotlight on children
Help bring a little light in the dark for those in need.

Starting June 1, 2009- for each SUNNAN solar cell powered lamp you buy, we'll donate one to UNICEF. These environmentally friendly lamps will go to children in developing countries, so they can read, write and study after sunset, even if their homes have no electricity.

In addition to doing something great for kids- you'll be helping the environment and your pocket book. These lamps come with two rechargeable AA 1.2V batteries for solar cell driven products, so all you have to do it give it sun. No plug in required. No cost on your electric bill. No CO2 emissions. Now that is what you call a BRIGHT idea!

IKEA is Bagless!
IKEA no longer offers plastic bags in an attempt to help minimize our carbon footprint!

At IKEA, you'll find all kinds of ways to "go green," but one of the easiest and least expensive ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to use reusable bags instead of throwaway plastic and paper bags.

IKEA has all kinds of options to express your eco-consciousness with style and keep more green in your wallet. Bags come in all different sizes- from the BRATTBY bag for just 49¢ to the huge and zippered FIXA bag for only $2.99! The best value is an IKEA icon, the 59¢ Big Blue Bag! And DIMPA is a great option for just $1.99- in four color styles, it is very fashionable and makes a great gift bag!

Just one more reason we say: Blue + Yellow = Green!

IKEA's Environmental Efforts
IKEA's goal is to help create a better everyday life for the many people. Part of this commitment involves being a socially responsible company.

IKEA always strives to minimize any negative environmental effects of our business, and CFL bulbs are just one more way. Today everybody is talking about energy consumption and the dangers of hazardous emissions harming the atmosphere. IKEA, however, isn’t just sitting back talking about it, we’re taking action! Promoting alternative compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs over less energy efficient lighting, such as incandescent bulbs, is one of the major strategies IKEA is implementing.

A CFL bulb lasts on average 10 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb and saves 80% more energy. So, although CFL bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the investment pays off in the long run because there’s a lot more energy saved. Along with lower energy costs CFL bulbs emit fewer greenhouse gases into the environment. These bulbs stay much cooler than other lighting sources, which makes it safer for children. Other benefits include being well-suited for utility areas where light is on for long periods of time, and for aesthetics.

While everyone is now selling these energy-efficient bulbs, IKEA is unique in a few ways:
Lowest mercury levels
IKEA has one of the lowest mercury levels in CFL bulbs on the global market and we plan to lower the level even more. Our ultimate goal is to create CFL bulbs without any mercury content, which is anticipated in 5-10 years.

Recycling our CFL bulbs
We’re one of the only retailers partnering with local recycling companies to properly recycle the mercury content from CFL bulbs and all other electrical equipment to avoid any environmental contamination. These bulbs require special disposal, and we'll do that for you free of charge.

What else can you recycle at IKEA?
Well, pretty much everything. Be sure to stop by our Recycling Center located by Returns and Exchanges to recycle light bulbs, paper and plastic. You may also bring cans, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard to recycle in our recycling bins located outside the store exit.

Check out our 3/pk of SPARSAM energy saving bulbs for $3.99, and save money while you help the evironment!
