ERRONEOUS INSTRUCTIONS!We just assembled this bookcase, and handsome it is. Unfortunately, along the way we damaged three of the hinges because, apparently, the instructions are incorrect in one detail
The pamphlet we have has a number on the reverse: 17920, dated 2016-07-04. In Step 29 one is to attach the hinges in their positions on the door frame. The illustration shows the hinges in their 'closed' position. In Step 30, one is to rotate the hinges 90° to their 'open' position'.
Before I did Step 29 I played with the hinges, rotating the arm back and forth from the 'closed' to the 'open' position. This was easy, as one might expect, but after I attached them to the door it seemed impossible to do this. I rechecked the instructions and, with very great effort, was able to rotate them as Step 30 indicates.
When I installed the door something was wrong. The doors would not close completely, or remain closed if I pushed them to the closed position.
I then tried, with the other three hinges, to reverse Steps 29 and 30, by rotating the hinges BEFORE I screwed them down to the doorframe. This time it worked, the door close to a point, then gradually close the rest of the way by themselves. Quite cool, actually.
But, to resolve this, I called IKEA twice, and replacements for the damaged parts are on their way. (Gratis.) I hope IKEA reviews these reviews (!) and makes a change here, if needed. What is in the paper copy of the instructions looks wrong to us.
I have given mediocre ratings for this product just because of the difficulties and wasted time the hinge problem caused. I would be pleased to raise the grade once I see IKEA has corrected what's 'off' here.

Great Cabinet - Very Spacious and Great DesignBought this cabinet in the red/brown for more kitchen storage space and love it. Got it on-sale for $199 which was a great deal. Very spacious. Shelves are strong. Pretty easy to put together. Took about 2-3 hours. Shelves are nicely adjustable. Love this cabinet.

Awful, from start to finish. If I could return it, I would. I live 6 hours from an IKEA in my country, and I purchased this truck-shipped and combined with a friend's order (her credit card). I've done lots of IKEA before--lots of Billy bookcases, several desks and tables and a hutch... these instructions were poor. Step 11 does not differentiate direction, when direction is actually important--you've got a 50% chance of orienting it upside down, and you won't find that out until several steps (and hours) later. The pins do not hold the shelves securely. Blow on it and they will topple. The shelves are not flush with the sides, like they are in the Billy series, and the pins are not long nor do they have a secure fit the way Billy does, so the shelves have barely any support. The doors' hinges are difficult to adjust. It's been 9 months and I still can't get it right--they somehow both rub each other in the middle and parts on the frame. The hinges on my Billys were so much easier than this, and the cabinets feel so much more secure. The "supportive" beam running the full height of the cabinet on the corner isn't one single piece, and the two pieces bow easily where they meet.
You may be asking, if I love Billy so much, why didn't I buy that, especially when it costs less? Well, purely for depth. Board games' boxes are usually 12" square or larger. Billy is only 11" deep.
I just cannot believe I bought this instead of Billy so that my baby would be "safe" from board game pieces. I don't believe she's safe from this bookcase!
Dear IKEA, would you please make Billy a couple inches deeper? I would be eternally grateful. And this cabinet? Wow. It needs a redesign, and the directions need help. I think you owe me $400, and I resent that I cannot return this.

Great unitI was replacing Billys from eons ago, and I LOVE these cabinets. There was slight damage on one side of one of the two I purchased, which in my configuration is hidden, so I didn't bother to do anything about it. Anyway, these look great, and have upgraded the family room beautifully. They're sturdy and went together relatively easily.

Upset in ohio from
CrackedI bought two and both had a crack in them. Not happy about this since I had to drive an hour and a half one way to get them so I wouldn't have to pay $450 for shipping
