A WORLD OF
CREATIVE COLLABORATIONS

2016 has seen a series of IKEA collaborations – a great way to explore new colours, shapes and patterns of thinking. Among the more surprising partners are fashion designers, like Katie Eary, Walter Van Beirendonck and Kit Neale. But, fashion designers are far from the only external inspirers that have recently been invited to join IKEA on common design adventures. Among them are also a glass master, an interior guru and 25 New Delhi-based design students.
The learning experience isn’t over. The coming year will see the result of several equally exciting collaborations, like the STUNSIG collection featuring six young print-, pattern- and colour-loving designers and artists, or the still unnamed collection signed IKEA and lighting maestro Tom Dixon, and yet another collaboration with Danish design brand Hay – just to mention a few.
But first, let’s take a look at what 2016 had to offer...

CRAWFORD ENGAGES YOUR SENSES
“It’s so important to get human qualitites like warmth, well-being and care into the end product. While this might sound fluffy, in practice it’s a rigorous process.” The words are Ilse Crawford’s, and she knows what she’s talking about. World famous for her interior furnishing and design projects she’s been a fabulous sparring partner to the IKEA team in the creation of the SINNERLIG collection. The outcome is more than 30, good to use, brilliant to look at, nice to the touch, pieces designed to engage our senses.

RÅMAN’S EVERDAY SPECTACULAR
Each day is equally important for Swedish glass designer Ingegerd Råman. That’s why her work centres on the beauty of everyday objects and why she loves design that makes a statement through the understated. Constantly correcting and improving her work, Ingegerd keeps going until only the essence remains.
“This collection is about craft, it’s a project between craftsmen and the designer. It has a lot of energy, and looking at the objects now – the things we did – for me, it represents love,” she says about the VIKTIGT collection, handmade through and through.

EVERYONE’S AN ART INVESTOR
What we put on our walls says a lot about who we are, and many of us don’t settle for art that matches our sofa. That’s why IKEA stores around the globe turned into the world’s largest public gallery during a few spring weeks 2016, making it possible for everyone to invest in great art. Yes, this is referring to the second annual IKEA Art Event where 11 posters were on display – the works of 11 photographers, established ones as well as the up-and-coming, from all around the world
“The art world has gone a little crazy when it comes to money and that’s not what it’s about, really. I think all artists want to create art that’s accessible and this seems to be a good way to achieve that,” says photographer and New Yorker Jill Greenberg about the collaboration with IKEA.

The art world has gone a little crazy when it comes to money and that’s not what it’s about, really. I think all artists want to create art that’s accessible and this seems to be a good way to achieve that.

KIT WANTS TO MAKE US SMILE
Start with four fictive album covers inspired by four loosely interpreted music styles, add a generation of modern nomads and voilà – you have the cornerstones of SPRIDD. The print-based collection of just about everything you need for an easier everyday life on the move is all about energy, attitude and fun. As it happens, the fun part is an inherent ingredient in all things signed fashion designer Kit Neale, who collaborated with IKEA in the making of the standout collection.
“It’s been a fun journey and hopefully the collection will be just as much fun to use. We want to bring smiles to people’s faces,” says Kit about the collaboration and the outcome.
Launched in selected markets November 2016 (global launch Febuary 2017).

It’s been a fun journey and hopefully the collection will be just as much fun to use.

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, David Wahl was given a mission. A young IKEA designer, David was asked to produce a unique object that could defeat the darkness in homes across the planet, bringing light and hope to the many. The result was the IKEA PS Pendant lamp: a planet-like lighting fixture that ‘explodes’ at the pull of a string, spilling warm, glorious light across surrounding spaces.
