IKEA HIGHLIGHTS 2016
STEPPING INTO THE
WORLD OF 3D PRINTING
WRITER: VANESSA ALGOTSSON
Ready for something new? So is IKEA. But when you’ve explored so much of life at home, where do you go next?
A drawn fantasy figure with big feet and a square-shaped body, dressed in a pink hood and jacket with green dots. Shown together with the 3D version.A drawn red fantasy figure with two legs, four arms and eyes all over the body. Shown together with the 3D version.A drawn fantasy figure with a red bowl-shaped head, big earrings and a blue floor-length cape with yellow dots. Shown together with the 3D version.A drawn fantasy figure with a round head with two big feathers and a body covered in a green fur coat. Shown together with the 3D version.
Together with Anterwerp-based fashion designer, Walter Van Beirendonck, the limited edition GLÖDANDE collection was brought to life. Full of bright colours and a hefty shot of whimsy, the collection is based upon the fantasy world of the Wondermooi—Van Beirendonck’s children of the clouds. These beautiful, weird little creatures, the likes of which you’ve never seen before, are the inspiration and base of a collection of pre-cut fabrics, stationary, shopping bags, rugs, porcelain and pillows.
“Every collection is starting with research and the things I like to see together. When I started with the IKEA project, I wanted to handle it almost like a fashion collection. I really wanted to gather a lot of inspiration, think about stories, think about ideas which could evolve into other things. I wanted to tell a story,” says Van Beirendonck.
I really wanted to gather a lot of inspiration, think about stories, think about ideas which could evolve into other things. I wanted to tell a story.

In addition to the fabulous accessories, all five Wondermooi are available for 3D printing and come with painting instructions, a major first for IKEA. So go ahead and start getting creative!

PEEKING INTO THE WORLD’S
LARGEST PRINT PRODUCTION
Translated into 33 languages, in 48 different markets, reaching about 255 million people, this year’s IKEA Catalogue welcomed everyone to be themselves. The statement was clear: IKEA doesn’t design furniture for consumers - they design for people. And the reality? People are human, and humans are not perfect.

A FORCE FOR GOOD DESIGN
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, David Wahl was given a mission. A young IKEA designer, David was asked to produce a unique object that could defeat the darkness in homes across the planet, bringing light and hope to the many. The result was the IKEA PS Pendant lamp: a planet-like lighting fixture that ‘explodes’ at the pull of a string, spilling warm, glorious light across surrounding spaces.
