The IKEA Group co-operates with a range of partners and organizations. The long-term sustainability direction is to have an overall positive impact on people and the environment in which IKEA operates. This is achieved by implementing sustainable solutions and alternatives in our daily work. Read more below about the groups IKEA co-operates with.

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)

BCI aims to promote measurable improvements in the key environmental and social impacts of cotton cultivation worldwide. BCI is a collaborative, multi-stakeholder effort initiated by WWF, the global environmental conservation organization, and the International Finance Corporation. BCI is open to all participants who subscribe to the mission and objectives of the project. Leading participants are international companies, NGOs and the United Nations Environment Programme. The IKEA Group is a member of BCI.

Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI)

BWI is the Global Union Federation of democratic and free trade unions, protecting more than 12 million members in 350 trade unions around the world in the building, building materials, wood, forestry and allied industries. BWI and the IKEA Group have, since 1998, established a long-term co-operation and an agreement based on the IKEA code of conduct, The IKEA Way on Purchasing Home Furnishing Products (IWAY). IKEA and BWI meet continuously to exchange experiences and discuss working conditions and social responsibility.

Business for Social Responsibility (BSR)

BSR is a global, non-profit organization that helps member companies achieve business success while respecting ethical values, people, communities and the environment. BSR provides information, tools, training and advisory services to make corporate social responsibility an integral part of business operations and strategies. The IKEA Group is member of BSR and has an IKEA representative on the board.

Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG)

CCWG, administered by BSR, is working to promote sustainable product transportation. CCWG develops voluntary environmental management guidelines and measures to help evaluate and improve the performance of freight transport. The aim of CCWG is to integrate product transport into corporate supply-chain management. Members are leading multinational manufacturers and retailers (shippers), freight carriers (ocean, road, rail and air service providers). The IKEA Group is a member of the Clean Cargo Working Group.

Global Compact

Global Compact is a network founded by the United Nations. It promotes responsible corporate citizenship and works to ensure that business is involved in solving the challenges of globalization. The Global Compact encourages companies to work with UN agencies, labor groups and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles. The organization's activities are based on 10 universal principles which promote human rights, labor rights, environmentally sustainable business practices and anti-corruption measures. Global Compact provides policy dialogues, training and networks. The IKEA Group is a member of the Global Compact.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace is an international non-profit organization focusing on threats to biodiversity and the environment. Greenpeace campaigns, among other things, to stop climate change, protect ancient forests and encourage sustainable trade. The IKEA Group discusses forestry and related issues with Greenpeace.

Green Power Market Development

Green Power Market Development, run by the World Resource Institute, is a partnership dedicated to building commercial and industrial markets for renewable energy. The group seeks to define the business case for corporate purchase of green energy products, to reduce market barriers faced by green power suppliers and buyers by providing independent information, and develop strategies that reduce green power costs by devising innovative purchasing options. The IKEA Group is a member of the organization, working to develop tools and strategies that increase the use of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Refrigerants Naturally!

Refrigerants Naturally is a United Nations initiative acting as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise and sustainable development of the global environment. Part of this work is to encourage new partnerships and mind-sets within the private sector to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology for sustainable development. The IKEA Group is a member of the organization.
