Children affected by migration Rapid social and economic change in China has led to mass urban migration. People hope to find a better life in the cities. The number of children living and working on the streets is increasing. Many support themselves by collecting and selling rubbish. This Save the Children project contributes to the development of integrated child protection mechanisms throughout China.
Renaguli comes from the Xinjiang region. She was taken to Kunming, a city in Xinjiang, by a man and his family and forced to steal. When she refused, she was beaten.
Renaguli went to the police and they brought her to the Street Children Protection Center (SCPC). Through the center she was fed and well cared for and her family in Xinjiang was contacted.
"I am the youngest of seven children and my family has been very worried about me," she says. "I’m looking forward to doing my homework again – when I get back."
