Wood is an excellent material from a quality and environmental perspective, as long as it is legally produced and comes from responsibly managed forests. IKEA does not accept wood that is illegally logged or that comes from intact natural forests. Our long-term goal is to source all wood for IKEA products from forests certified as responsibly managed.
Requirements on wood suppliers IKEA works with a step-by-step staircase model to place increasingly higher demands on suppliers of wood for IKEA products. Forestry specialists at IKEA The IKEA Group's forestry specialists are working in the field in our key wood-sourcing regions. These forestry specialists support business development towards the long-term goal of sourcing all wood used in the IKEA range from forests certified as responsibly managed, and help the IKEA trading service offices to trace the wood back to its origins.
Forest tracing Each year IKEA suppliers must report the origin, volume and species of all wood used in IKEA products. IKEA can then identify the level of the staircase model the supplier has reached.
This information and a risk assessment are used to select a number of wood supply chains for closer evaluation, IKEA forestry specialists audit the suppliers' and sub-contractors' wood supply from the factory all the way back to the forest of origin. Rainforest Alliance Smart Wood Program, a third-party auditor, complements the IKEA auditing system by conducting a limited number of wood supply chain audits. Read more about Rainforest Alliance
IKEA forest projects The IKEA Group participates in a number of forestry projects with external organizations in order to contribute to the development of responsible forestry practices and policies in countries where we work. The IKEA Group's forestry projects focus on responsible management practices, building capacity for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, combating illegal logging and forestry research and education.
