I am sure that I will still be a constant contributor to IKEA for many more years to come!
On 14 November 1983, I began my journey with IKEA. At that time, my position was a 'Salesman' with the furniture department. IKEA then was just a modest little showroom in Sixth Avenue.
In 1984, the store moved to Katong and remained there for 11 years. I was promoted to Deputy Supervisor in 1985 and my duty was enlarged to overseeing our sales co-workers. I embraced the new challenges and was excited to be part of the growing IKEA team.
1995 was a very memorable year. It was the year which marked the turning point for both the store and me. I witnessed yet another growth for IKEA. The store moved to Alexandra which is a bigger location at 22,500m².
I was promoted to Supervisor for kitchen and dining. From a smaller store with limited variety of products to a bigger store with wider product range, accompanied with my new supervisory role, I was really thrilled and ready to face the new wave of changes and challenges.
Time dashed past and I have been with IKEA for more than 25 years. Through the years, I have made many good friends and they have become more like family to me. I converted to permanent part time employment in 2009 as I am already in my 70s. I am really glad and touched that IKEA has always been an advocate for re-employment and continuous learning. I am sure that I will be a constant contributor to IKEA for many more years to come!
