Peter – Range development, Sweden
Peter started working full time for IKEA after gaining a degree in Wood Science from Hamburg University – “I wanted to work for a company that could offer me a challenging and stimulating situation as I tire easily of routine work”. Since then Peter has worked in a variety of jobs across his home country of Germany and in Russia and Sweden.
“When an IKEA store was opened in Moscow and I was offered the position of furniture sales manager in the national organisation, I jumped at the chance,” he says. “However, I could never have done it without the support and encouragement of my partner; I also went back home to Germany on a regular basis to re-charge my batteries! It was hard work, but at the same time it was a very interesting job and I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Peter relishes the challenges involved in moving abroad. After Russia, he transferred to Ämhult, Sweden, where he has been working for three years. There he feels he has finally found a place he would like to settle, at least for the time being.
He has just begun a new job as project leader for the worldwide launch of a new segment range. “IKEA of Sweden is a very good company to work for because it offers so many opportunities for promotion within the corporate division,” he says. ‘I have the chance, if I work hard, to reach a very high level of responsibility, with the kind of opportunities I never realised would be open to me.”
After 10 years with the company, Peter is philosophical about his commitment to IKEA: “I learn something new every day, only when I stop learning will I know it’s time to move on.”
