Planner tool

The best way to start is with pen and paper. Measure everything carefully and make a rough sketch of your kitchen. That should give you a good idea of the possibilities and limitations that are determined by the shape of the room and the available wall space.

The room

Make a drawing of the room. Measure the height to the ceiling and the distance between walls. Mark out the current position of all permanent fixtures, such as doors, windows, ventilation, plumbing, electricity, radiators, special angles and any other major architectural features.

The walls

Make a drawing of the walls. Measure the height and width of the walls that you want to use for cabinets. Remember to take into consideration the space doors and windows need to swing open. If you’re planning to place a cabinet under a window, remember that the minimum distance between the window frame and the floor should be at least 90 cm, and preferably 105 cm. Include the positions of all permanent fixtures.
For more information on standard distances, check out our ergonomics section.
