IKEA set to open City Centre Store in Southampton

Today IKEA announced that Southampton City council have resolved to issue planning consent for a new store in the city centre. This decision comes just a month before IKEA opens its first city centre store in Coventry on December 16th.

Welcoming this decision, IKEA’s UK Country Manager, Peter Hogsted said:

“We are absolutely delighted that Southampton city council have supported our decision to come to Southampton. We know our customers often travel long distances to come to IKEA and city centre locations give us the opportunity to open stores that are truly accessible to the many people. “

IKEA are now looking forward to the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmation of Southampton City Council’s decision to issue planning permission. This is the second application for an IKEA store in Southampton area, the first was at Milllbrook and was unsuccessful due to Central government restrictions on out of town retailing. With this new location in the heart of the city centre IKEA is hopeful that this proposal will meet the high expectations from the local and national planning authorities.

IKEA worked closely with Southampton City Council to create a development appropriate to the City Centre environment that will assist the council with its regeneration plans for the area.

IKEA have plans to develop and open on the former Pirelli site, West Quay road.
The proposed IKEA Southampton store will be 34,000 square meters, holding a product range of over 9,000 articles across four floors. The store will also have a 600 seat restaurant, selling IKEA food and beverages to customers.

The car park will provide 900 parking spaces. However, the store will be situated close to Southampton Central train station, is convenient for local bus routes and is within easy walking distance of the rest of the city centre shops and services. IKEA has a green transport policy which encourages its customers to use public transport to get to the store.

The development will bring over 500 local job opportunities ranging from sales, interior design, logistics, restaurant, customer services, warehousing and many more. There is also the opportunity for training for managerial positions, and for working internationally.

The Southampton city centre store will be a family friendly store, full of furnishing inspirations, smart solutions and fantastic offers.
