Cotton

Cotton is one of the most important raw materials for IKEA, and we work actively to promote better cotton growing methods. IKEA wants the cotton used in IKEA products to be produced in a sustainable manner, taking into consideration both people and the environment.

Conventional cotton growing and processing consumes large amounts of water and chemicals. Together with WWF, IKEA is actively involved in developing better cotton cultivation practices to increase the volume of cotton produced in an environmentally friendly way.

Results that inspire

Thousands of cotton farmers have joined IKEA and WWF cotton projects in India and Pakistan. They have proved that conventional cotton can be grown in a more eco-friendly way – and with better profits.

New ways spread from farmer to farmer

The IKEA and WWF cotton projects are based on hands-on training in the field. Farmers see and experience the benefits of changing the way they grow cotton, and successful farmers act as inspiration to others.

Meet some of the project farmers

Better ways of cotton farming are spreading from farmer to farmer across several states in India and Pakistan. Meet three Indian farmers in various stages of their journey towards more sustainable cotton cultivation.

From cotton fields to the IKEA range

It’s a long and winding road from the cotton fields in India and Pakistan to textile products in the IKEA store. Yet we are determined to make all IKEA cotton products from this more sustainable cotton, and availability is increasing rapidly.

Child rights programmes in cotton and cotton seed farming

IKEA Foundation supports UNICEF and Save the Children projects in the cotton areas of India and Pakistan. The aim is to strengthen children’s rights and eliminate child labour.

Better Cotton Initiative

IKEA is a founding member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). BCI aims to promote measurable improvements in the key environmental and social impacts of cotton cultivation worldwide to make it more sustainable. Leading participants are international companies, NGOs and the United Nations Environment Programme.
