Kitchen Wisdom

Planner tool

Countertops are probably the hardest-working element in your kitchen. They’re subjected to a daily onslaught of knocks, spills, hot pans, sharp knives and even the occasional full weight of a human being (most of us have probably clambered on to a countertop to change a light bulb or reach the back of a cupboard sometime). So strength and resilience are big priorities. But the best countertops are also hygienic, easy to wipe clean, and impervious to food odours and stains.

There is no single material that can fulfill all these requirements better than any other, but here is what you can expect from each.

Solid Wood

Solid wood conjures up images of nature, warmth and a wholesome goodness that can be so important to a kitchen’s atmosphere. It’s also versatile enough to fit a variety of kitchen styles – from a basic minimal design to the classic country kitchen.

Looks aside, wood is extremely hygienic. It possesses a natural acidity that stops bacterial growth - making it a great surface for food preparation.

It is also very durable and forgiving of wear and tear. In fact, the odd scratch can often add to its charm. Like a fine wine, it ages gracefully and matures over time. However, it’s important to treat the wood with oil so it can withstand the heat and moisture of a working kitchen environment.

Laminates

Laminated surfaces have their own advantages. They are hard-wearing, easy to clean, and make an extremely economical alternative to solid wood.

The material is made up of a thin plastic laminate bonded to a chipboard, plywood or MDF (medium density fibreboard) for greater stability. It can cope with hot pans, withstand a certain amount of knocks and scratches, and shrug off wine and hot drinks.

Since they’re available in a variety of finishes and details, finding one that sits beautifully along your cabinets couldn’t be easier.
Countertops that are less work

At IKEA stores, you can choose ready-made counter tops in solid wood or laminated counters – all cut into handy sizes. Solid wood is sanded smooth and ready to install. Laminated tops have finished edges, which makes installation easier while ensuring a tight fit that’s resistant to moisture and wear. It’s what you need, in just the right sizes.
Custom-made countertops
