IKEA and WWF Co-operation
WWF, the global conservation organisation, and the IKEA Group joined forces in 2002 to promote responsible forestry in key regions around the world. Together we started joint projects that are important steps in implementing IKEA's long-term forestry goals and in achieving WWF's conservation targets.

In 2005, WWF and the IKEA Group agreed to co-operate on a second phase of projects, carried out in Vietnam, Russia, China, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria. This led to the decision to expand into other areas of common interest such as sustainable cotton farming in India and Pakistan and sustainable rattan harvest and production in Laos and Cambodia.

WWF and IKEA Co-operation Summary (English, PDF, 2 pages, 2 MB)

Cotton produced in a better way

The IKEA Group and WWF have started projects in Pakistan and India to introduce Better Management Practices for producing cotton in a more environmentally friendly and healthy way. Both countries have projects that will run for three years.

The projects work with local cotton farmers in Farmer Field Schools. The aim is for 2,000 farmers in Pakistan to pass through the Farmer Field Schools during the three-year period and that 500 farmers will be trained in the Indian project. In Pakistan, the project started in 2005, while in India work began in 2006.

Climate change projects

The IKEA Group and WWF co-operate in projects aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (CO²) generated by IKEA operations, in order to reduce its impact on climate change. The projects run from early 2007 until the end of September 2009.

The agreement covers two main areas:
• Increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy at IKEA suppliers
• Developing sustainable transportation for people
