The IKEA Group is involved in many national and local activities. Below you can read about those that are taking place in your country or your local community.
Plastic Bags As part of IKEA Canada’s commitment to reduce plastic bag consumption and be an environmentally responsible company, we now charge 5¢ for plastic bags. All proceeds will be donated to Tree Canada who use the funds to plant trees and help offset CO2 emissions.
Customers are welcome to purchase an IKEA Reusable Blue Bag for only $1. The IKEA Reusable Blue Bag holds a lot and you can use it over and over for almost anything you need to carry.
GREEN Parking at IKEA Two prime parking spaces at every IKEA location in Canada have been reserved for customers driving hybrid or fuel efficient vehicles. Located near the front entrance of the store directly after the handicapped and family parking, the GREEN parking spots reward those customers who drive to IKEA the greener way.
IKEA Canada welcomes all drivers of hybrid cars and fuel efficient vehicles recognized by the Federal government’s tax relief incentive (cars that use less than 6.5L of gas per 100km) to take advantage of IKEA’s Green Parking spaces.
Free Battery and Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Recycling Program As a larger retailer of batteries and energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), IKEA recognizes the importance of proper recycling because of the low levels of Mercury in these products. Since 2001, all 11 IKEA locations in Canada have offered a “Free Take Back” program for CFLs and batteries.
Customers are encouraged to bring back their CFLs and batteries (and we will take non-IKEA brands) so that the products can be disposed of responsibly. The service is available at the returns and exchanges area.
IKEA Canada works closely with Raw Materials Company (RMC, A division of International Marine Salvage Inc.) who specializes in battery recycling, hazardous waste hauling and processing, and have been actively recycling for more than 25 years.
UNICEF Holiday Card Kiosks Help Raise Funds for Children around the world Every year, IKEA Canada opens up its doors to UNICEF Canada’s holiday card and gifts kiosk program to help raise funds for children around the world during the holiday season. Since the kiosk program began 10 years ago, the holiday card and gift program at IKEA has raised over $3 million to date for UNICEF Canada. The proceeds from the sale of UNICEF cards and gifts at IKEA directly fund UNICEF projects for children in over 150 countries.
Tree Canada Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree For over 10 years, IKEA Canada has been partnering with Tree Canada to participate in an annual tree planting event - Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree. With the help of IKEA co-workers, volunteers and Tree Canada experts, saplings, trees and shrubs are planted in community parks, schools and riverside areas across Canada.
In its partnership with Tree Canada, IKEA donates part of the proceeds from the sale of Christmas Trees sold during the month of December to help fund the Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree program. Since the program began, nearly 14,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in communities across Canada.
