IKEA and WWF Conservation Partnership

IKEA and WWF work together in a partnership to promote responsible forestry, better cotton cultivation, and to address climate change.

The WWF and IKEA co-operation first began in 2002 to jointly promote responsible forestry. The first years of co-operation showed that by working together, more can be achieved.

Forestry projects

The forest projects aim to combat illegal logging, support responsible forest management and certification, and develop and promote innovative management tools. Examples of projects 2005-2008:

Promoting responsible wood trade and development of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification in China.
Identifying high-conservation-value forests and supporting FSC certification in Romania and Bulgaria.
Supporting legal cross-border wood trade between Russia and China.
Promoting legal compliance in the forestry sector and responsible forestry practices in Russia.
Certifying an acacia plantation to FSC standards in Vietnam.
Developing sustainable production and sourcing of rattan in Laos and Cambodia.

Cotton produced in a better way

The IKEA Group and WWF have started projects in Pakistan and India to introduce Better Management Practices for cultivating cotton in a more environmentally friendly and healthy way. Both countries have projects that will run for three years.

The projects work with local cotton farmers in Farmer Field Schools. The aim is for 2,000 farmers in Pakistan to pass through the Farmer Field Schools during the three-year period and that 500 farmers will be trained in the Indian project. In Pakistan, the project started in 2005, while in India work began in 2006.

Climate change projects

The IKEA Group and WWF co-operate in projects aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (CO²) generated by IKEA operations, in order to reduce its impact on climate change.

The projects cover two main areas:

Increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy at IKEA suppliers
Developing sustainable transportation for people
