Towards a sustainable future
2013 in brief

We want to have a positive impact on people and the planet. For many years we’ve focused on economizing with resources and helping to create a better everyday life for people. One year on from the launch of our sustainability strategy, People & Planet Positive, we’ve made good progress.
Today, more than 2/3 of our cotton came from more sustainable sources. Over 550,000 solar panels are now installed on IKEA buildings worldwide. That’s enough to cover about 130 football pitches and provide annual electricity needs of 20,300 homes. The 12 million LED bulbs we sold last year helped our customers save a total of €86 million off their yearly energy bill, compared to incandescent bulbs.
But we’re not done yet. We’re just warming up….

Climate Committed
Our global CEO Peter Agnefjäll addressed the UN Climate Summit on September 23 to push governments and businesses around the world to take bold action to address climate change. Earlier that week, Peter joined Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard in the Peoples’ Climate March where well over 300,000 people filled the streets of New York City to urge world leaders to act on this issue that is crucial to our shared future on Earth.

IKEA is committed to producing more renewable energy than the energy the company consumes worldwide by 2020. In a significant step toward this goal, IKEA Canada has invested in a 20-turbine wind farm in Alberta that will produce more than double the energy we currently consume across Canada, or enough electricity to power approximately 15,000 homes.

During his speech to the UN Climate Summit, CEO Peter Agnefjäll announced that IKEA will accelerate the transformation of the materials we use. IKEA has committed to use 100% renewable or recycled plastics in our home furnishings products by 2020. This change alone will prevent 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
