Turning your home into a hotel

If you’re entertaining at home over the festive season then it’s likely you’ll be host to some additional guests, and this can add some pressure if you’re not adequately prepared.

Whether you need to extend the dining table, find more sleeping accommodation, or spruce up the bathroom, there are a few simple steps you can take to make those extra guests feel at home.

IKEA Adelaide Store Manager Ms Agneta Simon said the festive season is the perfect time to create a welcoming environment in the home, and additional guests can add to the atmosphere.

“If you’ve got extra house guests staying over then finding additional beds and sleeping space can be a challenge.

“Day-beds provide a great solution for accommodating people overnight because they can be used as an occasional piece of furniture throughout the year, and not just brought out for special occasions.

“Many day-beds also incorporate additional storage, which can be used to store bedding or for your guests to store their belongings.”

The IKEA BRIMNES day-bed is a great example. It can act as a sofa, single bed, bed for two and storage in one piece of furniture. The bed frame comes with generous drawers and the headboard has room for books, magazine files and holes for cables.

Another option is the TROMSÖ underbed, which fits neatly under a bunk bed or day-bed, and creates a quick and easy extra bed when needed. When not being used, it’s easily stored away and doesn’t take up unnecessary space.

“Further storage can also be created by using an affordable adjustable clothes rack with built-in hanging space and storage compartments, said Ms Simon.

“The key to having guests stay over at Christmas is to make them feel welcome, without them having to live out of a suitcase.

“This may also mean stocking up with a few extra towels, bathroom slippers, shampoo and other toiletries. These little touches will make guests feel right at home.”

Bringing people around the table to share food and swap stories is one of the best things about Christmas.

However, most dining tables accommodate between 6 and 10 guests, and extra additions to the table can mean you’re rubbing elbows with your neighbour.

Investing in a brand new dining table can be expensive, but a good solution is an affordable extendable dining table and some folding chairs.

For example, the IKEA BJURSTA creates more seating space with two extra leaves that lock in place and are stored conveniently under the table top. These can be complemented with an IKEA NISSE, TERJE or JEFF folding chair.

According to IKEA Adelaide Store Manager Ms Agneta Simon it doesn’t matter if every chair doesn’t match or a couple of tables are joined together.

“People expect a bit of ‘mix and match’ at Christmas, and this can also add to the atmosphere of the occasion.

“Some uniformity can be created with more inexpensive items like napkins, crackers and table centrepieces.”

Entertaining extra guests can also lead to a quick count of the cutlery, crockery and glassware. Most people like to avoid the paper plates, so some affordable and practical dining essentials can get added to the list.

“When choosing additional table settings, it pays to keep the colours neutral as it means they can be used the whole year round, and it’s much easier to add some finishing decorative seasonal colours,” said Ms Agneta Simon.

“It’s best to try and avoid the one off purchases, so try to think of the items use beyond the Christmas holidays.”

IKEA stocks a great range of affordable kitchenware. Look out for the LUGN dinnerware, BONUS cutlery set and SVALKA glassware.
