The story of IKEA began in 1943 in the small village of Agunnaryd, Sweden, when Ingvar Kamprad, the founder, was just 17. Since then, IKEA has grown into a global retail brand with 127,000 co-workers in 41 countries generating annual sales of more than 23.1 billion EURO.

As of August 2011, there were IKEA stores in more than 38 countries. 287 stores in 26 countries owned by the largest IKEA franchisee, the IKEA Group: Australia (QLD, NSW, VIC), Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and USA.
The other 37 stores are owned and run by other franchisees in 16 countries/territories. These are Australia (WA, SA), United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, and Turkey.
One store in the Netherlands is owned and operated by Inter IKEA Systems B.V.
