Reuse, reduce, repurpose: Seven ways to a more sustainable summer

01 May 2015

Choosing to live sustainably is kind of like making a New Year’s resolution. You give something up, probably because it’s not 100% good for you (like chocolate). After a couple of months you’re back to your old ways. You maybe consume even more. We think the secret to success could be making small, doable changes (like just cutting back on that chocolate) and reminding yourself that every little bit helps. Here are seven small ways to live more sustainably and simply this summer. No sacrifices required.

Repurpose

Why throw things away when you can use them to make something else? By repurposing stuff you already have at home, less waste will end up in the bin, you won’t have to buy as many new products and you give used things a new - and good looking - lease on life.

1. Love jam, pesto, mustard - basically anything in a jar? Then you no doubt have loads of empty jars in your recycling bin. Turn them into mini plant pots instead. Oh, and the aloe vera featured here is a great natural remedy for sunburn.

2. Old pillow cases make great reusable shopping bags. Just add a handle and personalise.

Reduce

You don’t need to completely give up the things that make your life easier, but you can try cutting down on some of them. Reducing your energy consumption is an easy way to start. And it has a big impact. So instead of using machines to help you do things, use your own body.

You could swap some of those shorter petrol-powered journeys to peddle-powered ones. OK, you can’t do a big shop on a bike, but with a basket on the back, you can buy the essentials.

4. Give the tumble dryer a summer holiday and hang your laundry instead.
No garden? A curtain rail in front of the window means you can dry your clothes in the sunshine indoors.

Plant herbs into hanging plant pots above your dining table. They’ll fill your dining room with a wonderful aroma and they’ll be on hand when cooking and preparing salads. 5. Yum! Fresh herbs in your summer salad. But, oh, they come from a country on the other side of the planet. Why not try growing your own to reduce food miles? Start small, pick your favourite and grow from there.

Reuse

You’ve already got something, so you don’t need to use anything new. This means less energy is used overall and you’ll save money and resources. A perfect combination.

Your house plants are thirsty. You’re in the shower. Collect the water and treat your plants to their own summer shower. Just be sure to use soaps, shampoos and conditioners that are (SLS) chemical free.

7. You don’t need to buy a new water bottle every time you go out. Reuse the ones you have and personalise them.
