Putting personality on display

01 June 2015

‘Our home is a mishmash – a mix of family art and homespun styles,’ says Tamar. ‘It works because everything is personal and means something to us.’

Tamar’s creative mix

Tamar is a rebuilder. A fashion editor turned jewellery designer, she has moved between Israel and the US – first with her husband Ronen, then with their three sons – and rebuilt her family life in a 160m2 Vermont ranch house. ‘I show my heritage through my home and my sense of family influences its style,’ she says. ‘Many of my family are artists, including my mother, who was a wonderful painter. Our walls are covered with art, much of it by family members.’ Now that her youngest son has left for college and she’s an empty nester, Tamar’s redefining her home once again. As she says, ‘Exploring my creativity gives me a sense of purpose.’ We went to visit to be inspired by this artistic and creative home.

‘I don’t want to feel too precious about the things I live with – customising them adds personality. Simple ideas can make home feel new.’

Create a sociable kitchen

‘Our IKEA kitchen is the heart of our home. I love to cook and it’s where people always hang out when they come over. We bought it six years ago and brought it home in the back of our car. We planned it online and fitted it in three days.’

‘We kept the basic layout of the old kitchen but fitted open shelves instead of wall cabinets to give the room a sense of openness – and so that I can display my crockery.’

Make a creative corner

‘I work from home designing jewellery but space is limited, so my work studio is in the dining room. It’s a wall with a BILLY bookcase and a desk, but it’s everything I need to work well. My BILLY is perfect for storing papers, tools and accessories while I have photos and things that inspire me out on display.’

LAYER ON PATTERN AND COLOUR

‘A wardrobe door decorated with a patchwork of paper squares is the kind of small idea that makes all the difference, and looks great with the colourful mix of old and new textiles we have on our bed.’

Frame your story

‘We love to display who we are as a family. The only rule? Everything has to mean something to us. We combine mismatched frames, meaningful objects, art by our family and photos – we’ll start with one piece and add to it as the years go by.’

Personalise storage

‘I’m always looking for new ways to store and display. I turned an old frame into a pinboard to organise my jewellery by filling the empty frame with mesh material. It’s space-saving, colourful and unique.’

Add welcoming details

‘Our hallway is one place where people often “cross over”, though not always at the same time. Displaying personal mementoes and adding a message board helps family and friends stay connected.’

‘Creativity sparks creativity. Our home is not just for show – it’s a place to have ideas and put them to use.’
